MXT + D2 coil sniffs out a barber half

This is not a significant find by far but it was surprising where it was found. I found it in a park that has been hunted very thoroughly for several decades now. I've hunted this park for at least 10 years and so far have only found 3 silver dimes(trifecta at that) and a couple modern silver jewelry pieces previously. This is the only silver coin I've found at this park aside from the 3 dimes. The D2 coil is probably my favorite coil, the 950 is such a great coil and nearly as favored. The D2 gains an edge for me since it separates amazingly. I credit its separation for finding this Barber Half in such a high pressured area. All those people detecting this spot before me must have missed it for a reason. There were big heavy rusty nails all around in close proximity to this Barber, perhaps they caused some nulling with other setups. It was about 6 inches and gave a perfect high tone (positive at 25 cent, occasionally showing a partial 50 cent) in C/J mode with tone ID on with my MXT pro. While digging I was nearly sure it was a quarter and trying not to jinx myself with thoughts of bottle caps as those can fool the D2 coil and give a very similar signal. This coil gives me hope in areas where hope was all but abandoned after the 1980's!

PS: This coin has had a rough life after being dropped, it appears to have been hit by a lawn mower. :(

Great find and nice detecting in the hunted park. Put a 2x4 over it and pound it flat with a hammer. Lawnmowers do some damage but that one isn't as bad. I'm surprised the VDI was so low. Usually it's right on the money. Did you find the bullets in the park also? Congrats on your hunt and HH, Nancy

I was thinking it might make a cool pendant as is. Nice find. I wonder if the irregular shape could have effected others ability to find it. Was it laying flat or on edge?

Great find, the shape of it would change the vdi as well.

It was nearly completely on its edge, just slightly tilted. I'm not too surprised about it showing as a quarter. With iron all around it, bent and at 6 inches it was still a definite DIG signal. Like I said, All indications suggested it was a quarter, and a solid signal at that. I'm really curious if the D2 being that it VDIs a bit on the HIGH side, combined with the fact that it VDI'd slightly LOW, if other setups made it look more like a bottle-cap which would be somewhere around +40 to +50 if you made a direct comparison to whites VDI chart. If thats the case, I can see a lot of people not digging those bottle-cap signals.
How many of you have found a quarter or half dollar from a bottle-cap signal?? Just wondering if that might be the case for this target or if its even possible for a half to VDI that low on a concentric coil, assuming thats what the previous detectorists where using before me.

Thanks for the 2x4 idea, Nancy! I just might try that. Also, yes the bullets were found near this coin in the same park. They are both huge, the larger one is probably the biggest caliber I have found. Its deceiving because the half dollar looks like a quarter in size in the pics but the bullets are just that big. lol

That's so unusual for that to read so low. Even if there was an iron target near by, one would think it would sound off on a high note. But then maybe in the right conditions, it's what it is. You're very lucky you found her and rescued it. Makes you wonder why there's spent bullets in the park. Kind of scary. We've found live 22 bullets in a playground before and pocketed them. Also found large live 45 cal. bullets and gave them to the local authorities. They think it's neat, nothing better to do I guess. LOL. Thanks for posting and keep hunting those parks. HH, Nancy

I find quite often that the shape of things can give a different reading. Just the other day I was hunting ( snow melted) & got a good signal for gold or a nickle vdi 20. I dug & recovered a ring that had been smashed together. I could see gold on the inside but the outside was covered with dirt. I thought great old gold, once I got home I cleaned it up & knew from the copper sign that it was not gold. Once I got the ring round again I ran my mxt over it again vdi 40 brass with copper coating. Oh & by the way the only good target I got that day (just for you Nancy) a 1923 ef buff, sad thing it was a P not an s mint mark.

Way to go Bula! :clapping: Oh, that's so cool. Yes, I'm smiling! HH, Nancy

Good hunt. A barber half is a barber half ! :clapping:

Nancy, I took your advice and beat it flat with a hammer and I kinda wonder if you were serious now that I look at it. Now it looks more like a lid to a paint can than a coin....

I'm just messin with you, it looks great! I used 2 boards and it never even caused any flats spots. There are some deep creases that are still visible but at least it looks much more like a coin.

Sorry if your heart skipped a beat, its good for ya!

After flattening between 2 wood boards. Looks a lot better!

Aaron, You stinker! My stomach was getting that gut wrenching feeling. YOU BIG STINKER!!!! You really got me on this one. I didn't mean take a hammer to the coin, but put a 2x4 over it and..well, you know the rest .....LOL. I think it looks better also. I'd give you 50 cents for it? :bouncy: Whew, glad you like it. Those are really nice looking coins. I owe ya one! HH, Nancy

Hahaha he had me too. Still think it would make a great looking pendant or medallion. The crumpled look adds to the look IMO. I doubt it has any particular value to coin peeps in it's crumpled condition anyhow.

I couldn't help myself, nancy!

Thats a cool idea, RedRockNv! I might keep my eyes open for a half dollar pendant, I HATE holing a coin, even though you couldn't hurt this ones value its just the principle of adding damage to an old item. I think its earned its 'keepsake' value when it survived a lawnmower attack. lol

I know Aaron, I know. You got me good.

Oh yeah, it would make a great pendant! Larry wears the French gold coin that he found all the time. Just look for a bezel that goes around the coin and then no need for a hole. Most coin/jewelry stores can get one for you. HH, Nancy
