MXT & Coin Question

I just got out last weekend and in a half an hour I found my first silver nickel, 3 clad quarters, and a silver Rosie. This was at the local school. Now in areas of old foundations dating to the early 1800's should I be in the coin or relic mode? I tried the relic mode in one place and what was listed as a belt buckle, came out as a half dollar in the coin mode. Alas it was in an old park and was a aluminum can squashed on end. Go figure.
The coin question is why are some of the clad red and others black. I'm up in western NY state. I tried cleaning in white vinegar and aquarium rocks, Some came out nice others stayed red and hideous. What is the best way to clean clad without going to a lot of expense?

Good question. I would like to hear thoughts on that too!!

You have to learn the numbers, that dime you found in coin mode came in at around 80 & said dime, in relic mode the number should have been the same & said buckle. On cleaning clad I got this recipe from the forum & it works great. In your tumbler put two cups of rocks (the white fish tank type), 1/2 cup ammonia, 1tbl spoon dish soap and a dash of water. Change volume according to the size of your tumbler, with amount I dump in about 100 coins and let them shake for about two hours. Most of it will come out looking new. I do my copper in one batch & the silver clad in another. Good luck & keep that coil swinging.

Fertilizer makes nickels red. and dimes green and the green is called vertigris. it is common on copper and low grade silver items. It should not show up on silver. It also will get on brass. It will migrate from one coin to another so best to get rid of verdigris by using ketchup or white vinegar. It will turn the green black but will no longer migrate to other coins. Hope that helps.

i've always thought that the red cclad coins is caused by wet ground. i just clean the dirt off the clad and either roll them and take to the bank or use them in vending machines. i hit a lot of my spots real often so i get a lot of the coins before they get too bad.

Bula,
Thanks for the cleaning recipe but I'm surprised that more didn't reply on which is the better mode to use in very old locations, coin or relic.

I have not found much difference. I thought at one time that relic mode gave me a little more depth but I really don't think so. I stay in coin mode most of the time just because it is easier to ID the target.

Relic mode gets you a hair more depth I believe and the discrimination is a slight better. I've talked with a few tech at White's that hunt in relic mode while swinging for coins/jewelry.

On old sites, especially when looking for the older deeper coins, I use Prospecting mode usually. I base my decision to dig on sound, VDI number, repeatability and ferrous content. It seems to go a bit deeper and the faint signals are much easier to separate in trashy iron-filled sites, especially with a 5" DD coil.

I use Relic mode sometimes in modern parks, but I don't find any use for Coin Jewelry mode at all.

Don't tumble the clad with pennies or the whole works will come out copper colored.
