MXT coil for gold

Tunanator

New member
Going to ask the experts on this one. Wish to start using the MXT more often for gold up on the San Gabriel river and wish to know which is the best coil to buy for just gold hunting. There are several out there but I want to know which one seems to be the best before I invest the money for one. Thanks in advance.

I think they are shy or don't want to give up their secrets...... In reading some of the past posts when we had many nugget hunters, it seems the 6X10 DD coils was the favorite.

6x10 works great but if you want to get into small spaces ( where gold hides) the 3x5 excelerator pro is great & you can run the hyper stat usually at near max

The San Gabriel river has lots of junk, from pull tabs to screw tops. But the good part is that you can still find gold nuggets there, especially after a heavy rain storm along parts of the river. The gold tends to be very small, so I would have to recommend the 4x6 shooter coil. Two reasons the 4x6 coil, one it is more sensitive to smaller objects and two you will be able to get around trash a little better. You will have to dig almost everything to find gold, unless the iron probability is 90%, I would question even 60% probability whether it was gold or not. I would also recommend 2 books, one by Joseph F. Petralia called Gold Gold and the other is Where to find gold in S. California by James Klein the books will help you read the river better for a better chance at finding some gold. Good luck

YES SIR, JUST BOUGHT A BRAND NEW MXT-PRO W/ THE NEW 300 12" COIL.DO NOT NEED THE THIS BIG COIL SO ITS UP FOR SALE PLUS A VERY MINT 1400 D.D.COIL.ANY WAY I USED TO HAVE THE STANDARD MXT AND BOUGHT THE SUPER" COIL SEF. 6X8" BUTTER FLY FROM KELLYCO.THIS COIL BLEW MY SOCKS OFF MXT HIT TARGETS 14" RUNNING IT WITH VERY LITTLE DISC.IT RAN CIRCLES AROUND MY 6X10"OVAL COIL PLUS THE 4X6: COIL.THE 4X6"WAS BETTER THAN THE 6X10 COIL! THIS SEF'S COILS ARE SUPER AND BETTER BUILT.THE NEXT GREAT COIL FOR THE MXT IS THE SEF. 10X12" BUTTERFLY COIL.

I was in Havasu City , California last fall and used my Mxt Pro for prospecting. I found a couple of nuggets in the dessert soil. The coil I used was White's double d 6_10 and it worked! Give it all of the sensitivity you can ground balance with and have fun.

if you are going to do a lot of prospecting i would and me and my wife put cover on are mxt to protect them when laying them on rockie ground.blowing dirt

Its kind of hard to answer your question not knowing more about the area that you are going to be hunting in. If you are going to be in open areas, then I would be totally comfortable with the 6x10dd, and if you are going to be working around heavy brush, boulders and obstructions, I would opt. for the 4x6dd. Both will do a great job on small nuggets with the 6x10 going a little deeper, but depending on the area that may not be what you need, the 4x6 obviously will let you get in tighter spaces for those hidden nuggets. The dd design works best in highly mineralized soils which are common in gold bearing areas. Personally, I stick with Whites coils. I own both as at times the need for one or the other shows itself clearly....

Good luck

I have the whites 5.3 eclipse mono on my MXT. In our mineralised ground in Australia the hot rocks are so noisy I sound like a duck when I'm detecting. This is what I used to do with good results re the amount of tiny targets I recovered. First find a spot that's not too mineralised and ground balance. Lock the balance in. The best way to do it was with the VSAT speed on maximum Gain where ever the threshold was stable. Detect at medium swing speed. Hot rocks are a broader signal but bullets, shot gun pellets, gold etc (real targets) are a quick sharp sound. I then pass over the target about 10 times watching the screen for an id number 0 to 30 If there was one on any of the passes over the target then I dig it.

I would prefer it if the on screen id dissapeared as soon as the coil left the target. Some sweeps you can hear 4 or 5 individual targets but the screen only gets one or two, there's no time for the rest.

Dicko..

I have never hunted for gold but if you would send me some I have both the 4x6 & the 6x10 & I will be happy to do some test & let you know which is best.
