MXT chatter question

New member
I have searched all over to answer this question, but came up empty.

When I turn on my MXT PRO, I turn all of my knobs to the "preset" triangles. As I turn the threshold knob clockwise, it goes from silence to a chatter then to a hum. However, once it starts humming, it is fairly loud. All of the videos I have seen and stuff I have read said that the hum needs to be light. I also read that people hunt in silent mode in which they turn the knob counter-clockwise so the hum simply fades away. I am just concerned due to the fact that below the hum is the chatter. Is this common. Thank you for your replies.

I have read some posts where people have complained about chatter and in some cases the coil connection was loose and simply tightening it has solved the problem. I don't hear any chatter when I first mine it on, but it could be the ground where you are. If you have a friend with the same machine, it might be worth a try to see if his machine does the same thing.
I used to always hunt in silent search but now that I've gotten used to it, I always use a threshold. First it lets me know that the machine is on, and that my headphones are working. Also, I am told that the machine is most sensitive when there is a slight threshold. I read one post where there was a faulty coil causing chatter and he sent it back to White's. Luckily, White's has great customer service and they replaced it right away. I've only had my MXT Pro a couple of weeks, so I'm certainly not an expert. Hope you get it figured out. Good Luck.

My new MXT Pro does the same thing. I can get the smooth hum about half turn, but if I try and turn it down it makes a crackly sound.

Thanks. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't just my machine.

First, let's look at the 'chatter' some talk about. I've even mentioned it in the past and what it is has nothing to do with the audio Threshold setting. Not really. Chatter or noise can be caused my nearby EMI (electromagnetic interference) and that can make any detector spit and sputter and sound a little rough. The best way to counter it is to reduce the Sensitivity level.

Usually the MXT's will hum along rather smoothly if the Sensitivity is lowered to about about 12-o-clock, but even at the 'preset' Sensitivity level it can start to get a little noisy depending upon the environment. If you increase to +1, +2 or +3 , which is where I usually operate, the 'noise' of 'chatter' can be a bit raspy sounding, but that's a Gain or Sensitivity level correction.

As for the Threshold audio hum, if you increase the tuner to just get a slight audio sound then you're adequately set. Can it be just a bit spitty sounding? Yes, and then you can increase the Threshold to a more solid 'hum', just don't adjust it too loud. You want the slight audio Threshold to get the best performance.

Can you reduce the Threshold audio similar to the way the factory set the M6? Yes, but for peak performance you want to have a 'proper' slight audio Threshold audio.

Ditto what Monte' said. A slight audible threshold / "HUM" is the way I run my MXT Pro and it remains very very loyal to me. I run the gain as high (+ 1, 2 or 3) as I can without it being too "chattery" for the soil I'm hunting in. Good luck. Practice makes perfect. CCH

I get the scratchy sound a bit as well, but I run the sensitivity up at the final arrow, and sometimes up into the +3 area. I just chalked it up to the mineralized soil around here (around 73 in prospecting mode). It really doesn't bother me too much, and I'd rather keep the sensitivity and deal with a bit of noise than to turn the sens down and possibly lose targets. YMMV. HH:usaf:

Yes,this is exactly what I'm referring to. However, I can get the get the smooth audio hum but if I try and turn it down so it is only "slight" is when it gets spitty. I turn it back up so it's just a smooth hum again and run it that way, but I don't think it's as quiet or slight as you're referring to.

Like I stated in my previous post, I would say I'm turned up about half way on my Threshold dial.

I've noticed a bit of chatter when I first start, but as soon as I've made a swing or two with the coil and the machine tracks the ground I can usually get a pretty smooth threshold at most sensitivity settings. At least in the ground around here.

A little extra chatter and noise is normal with this machine because of it's search frequency and the fact that it has an audio threshold. You WILL get used to it and in time be concerned when it is running TOO quiet. ( That's when I always glance at my settings to make sure they're properly set) The ONE thing you don't want is "falsing ". The key is to maximize the gain setting without it falsing. This can easily be learned from "The MXT Edge". Good luck . .
