MXT C&J mode threshold issue

Hello All,

Will someone comment on a minor issue that I have with my 2008 MXT, w/ 9 1/2" coil.
Thanks in advance.

When in C&J mode I get a wavering tone with threshold whether running at minimum threshold or a little higher.
Turning Gain down from Preset does not change or eliminate the wavering.
I've also tried three different brands of headphones, same result. And different coils, same results.
But, when I switch to Relic mode (over same ground, same location) the tone smooths out, with no issue.

The batteries are charged, machine is ground balanced, headphones plug is secure.

Suggestions please.

hi

the CJ mode is more unstable than the Relic mode due to the SAT speed, but depending the mineralization in your area lowering the gain to the preset would be enough to make it work smooth, maybe the cause could be some EMI

if you feel the machine is not working how is supposed to, you can try a reset, it seems to work for many people, it worked nice for me once too

Thanks for the tip on the reset.
I did the reset.
Then cranked the gain up to +3, swept the coil, then backed the gain off, it seemed to stabilize a little better.
Not as smooth as Relic mode, but tolerable.

I found another post from Lodihunter on 3/30/11 with a similar situation.

Seems like a common concern with the MXT. Minor problem on a good machine.

great the reset helped

the mxt is a noisy machine by nature. I usually run mine at the edge on relic alternate mode, that means the point where threshold becomes chatty, ussually around +1, at +3 there is too much noise for me too. Technically speaking, the Relic alt mode equals the SAT speed of C&J mode.

It takes some hunts to learn this machine well and it is worth

The CJ is a little more sensitive than the relic mode and what you might be having are emi issues. A cell phone in your pocket that is turned, other emi is always a problem. Have you tried changing locations while this is going on. Even try getting completely out of the area that your in. Cell phone towers in some areas are causing problems---from last reports.

Barney,
Great tip, yes I carry my turned on cell phone in my right lower pocket (military style BDUs) which would put it closest to the machine.
I didn't even consider that, next time out (tomorrow I hope) I'll turn it off.
Thanks.
