MXT - Best coil for nuggets?

Searching the Black Hills for nuggets and asking for suggestions of a better coil for this type of prospecting! I'm not overly impressed with depth of test nugget utilizing the 950 coil! (about 3-4 inches on "air" test.

depending upon the size of the nugget that isn't too bad.
No, the stock coil isn't the best choice for nugget hunting. If you are working an area which is known to produce LARGE nuggets, then the 950 might be 'OK.' Most nuggets I have found have been smaller, and I have had my best success using the smaller coils. The one impressing me the most this past year has been the 5" EXcelerator coil.
Realistically, what size nuggets are associated with the area you are looking?

Nuggets in this area are not known to be very large. I'd hate to guess at weight or average sizes. I used an air rifle "pellet" sized nugget to do the air test.

very decent performance from a 950 coil on a "pellet" at 3"-4". Small targets are tough to detect. If that's the size nuggets you have in your area, then I would personally use the 5" EXcelerator is the rockiest, brushiest areas, and if a little more open, for extra coverage, most likely the 6x10 Eclipse DD coil.

Wow I see by your post (4:15am) that you just couldn't sleep thinking about my coil question! I'm sure that I'm going to buy the 5 inch Excel from all the positive remarks posted here. Thanks for your input!

Did you have the GBal in Locked position?
I have found buckshot and pellets at that depth or greater with no problem (actually was in England- tend to find lots of small metal fragments too- like a little piece of copper maybe 1/4 inch long x an 1/8 or so and very thin at similar depths- I use the 6x10. The 4x6 should do very well to on small stuff.

I don't really remember if I did or not but just had it in Gnd for this air test.

Ron, somewhere near the beginning of the manual, there is a note explaining that you need to set ground lock when air testing.

Your right! I reviewed the manual again and there it was. Now I'll have to go and borrow that gold nugget from my friend and try it again. Thanks
