MXT arrived!!

It finally came. Any wait to take it out! Didn't seem to get much depth on air test hope it does better in the field.

Air tests are terrible tests. Mine has dissapointed me as well when I tried air tests, especially if you try it indoors. I believe you get better depth when you ground balance and have the right soil and it seems to help af you have a fresh rain. My dad began detecting in the 70's and detected for more than 20 years, he swore that the best time to detect was after a rain storm, possibly something to do with an electrical storm involved. I have my doubts that this is 'confirmed' but he detected a lot so he may have been onto something.

Another thing to remember, if you make a test garden it will not test the same as a similar target that the same depth. How could a person know it tests differently? Does anyone really know the test garden acts different than another target elswhere? I've dug a lot of coins that were deep and when the plug was removed the coin seemed to not be there anymore although it was. When you disturb the ground above and around a target, it no longer shows up the same as it did before you disturbed it. The old, intact, ground makes the targets show up better in many cases. If you make a test garden, it will simulate this disturbed ground affect and you will get less depth compared to old, intact, un-disturbed ground.

Our dads taught us both a lot that we can pass down, it takes a lot of experience to learn some of this stuff but its really fun!

Off the detector is very very chattering. It seems very unstable I cannot pass the sensitivity past five. Someone please help?

I am also a new owner of a MXT, and yes it is chattery but if you adjust your threshold to just barely audible you should be able to set your sensitivity to the preset mark. If you are doing this inside you will probably have some EMI which doesn't help. Regarding air testing - make sure you have your ground switch to "lock". I have air tested mine and it's really good, picks up an Australian Penny at 14" but no VDI number of course. If you can, purchase Jeff Foster's book "The MXT Edge" it's a must have for MXT users. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Kevin

What coil are you using and where are you trying out the detector? It can get more chattery around electrical devices and buried power lines, ect. Low batteries can cause extra chattering as well and BE SURE that you do NOT use 'Heavy Duty' batteries(Zinc

No attachments. I have the super 12 coil. I took it out today to some tot lots and it still drove me nuts. The only thing that helped was when I went into a silent seach with the threshold almost all the way down. This helped tremendously.

I think that the 12" coil may add to the noise, besides its not a good general use coil especially in a public park and tot lots. It sees way too much at any given time, junk, multiple targets, a lot of ground mineralization, ect. Its good for open fields where you will find less junk from human traffic. The smaller the coil, the more stable the detector will be. The 950 and 5.3 are very popular. I am using the D2 atm but I really suggest you stay awau from it until you are very familiar with the basic coils first. The D2 can frustrate a person if they are not ready to learn its quirks.Great coil but speaks a different language.

NO it does not air test well either; and the coin signal must fight the 12" of ground mineral signal to be detected. Save the 12" for relics.
Get the 9.5 and 6X10 loops. The 9.5 will get you plenty of cone shaped depth; the 6X10 can be run at higher sensitivity in bad electrical areas,
sees very little ground by comparison to a concentric, and is like a windshield wiper blade in covering ground+does excellent in iron.
You got a great coin hunter, don't get discouraged because of the 12" loop.:bouncy:

For me, tot lots = 5.3 Eclipse coil and sometimes even the 4x6 depending on trash. I don't even take the large coils to playgronds.
