MXT around the Beach and water???

grumpy

New member
I have heard that around the beach and water the MXT are noisy? Can anyone tell me if this is fact or not. I assume like garrett and all they are somewhat noisier but are the MXT machines good to use as a beach, shallow water machine or not??? Are the coils all waterproof???
Thanks
Grumpy

I haven't had a problem my MXT being noisy on the beach. Also the coils are waterproof. Just remember not to lift your coil over the main control unit when you're detecting in the water......water can run down the rod into your control box. There is also some great posts about water/beach hunting if you do a search on the subject on the MXT forum. HH, Nancy

Thanks Nancy;
That is kinda what I thought.
Good to see you got some press from White after all your helpful work here.
Thanks again

Grumpy, I have had great luck with my MXT on sand and wet sand. I personally do not hunt "in" the water with my machine in case I slip and fall or accidentally get the machine wet. I am not a man of means and don't want to have to buy another MXT needlessly. I searched the beach in Mexico found 3 gold rings, 4 silver rings, 1 ankle bracelet, 1 mans silver chain bracelet and numerous coins. :detecting: What I am not talking about is the hundreds of bottle caps, pull tabs and junk but it was all worth it. What I would suggest is get a Looonnnnng handled sand scoop and Dig, scoop, eye ball everything,

I've used my MXT at beaches in Newort and Middletown, RI. Lots of iron because beach houses were destroyed during the hurricane of '38. Although the 9.5 and DD coils are waterproof, when a wave is coming in, I raise the coil because immersion causes very harsh noises similar to those made when detecting too close over a large and shallow target. Wait for the water to receed, then keep swinging. Last year I bought a Coilsearch coil from Dixie Metal Detectors for my Sov. Elite. This coil was one of the 150 coils Dixie purchased from Minelab because Minelab found a bunch in their inventory that hadn't been sold. I asked if this coil was waterproof and was advised to run a bead of silicone sealant round the coil edges. Since I have a DD coil with my MXT, I also ran a silicone bead around the edges. Although this coil might be water proof, this simple procedure gives me a little more security and the sealant won't seep into the coil. Don't use spray sealant - it'll wash off. You just want to seal the edges.

I hope this doesn't sound rude, but if we are going to dig everything, what do we need a high dollar machine with all the controls for? Why not a cheaper, simpler one? And which one? Although I know some of the answers, I really would like to hear what you have to say about that. Thank you. James

First no single frequency VLF is the best detector for salt water beaches. I have used the MXT at Texas beaches and it did well. A multi frequency is just better. Why dig everything? In the dry sand using a long handled scoop it is easy and fast. Also the MXT is deep and sometimes a shovel is needed. On many beaches the very deep targets don't ID that accurate. The deeper the less accurate. Rob

With the long handled scoop why not scoop. I had a reading of " Foil and # 0' and scooped anyways and got a great 3 diamond engagement ring. I plan on returning to Mexico will take the MXT as a back up to my new Excalibur, I never had a problem with noise but I was not dealing with black sand.

I am wondering, with all of the black sands on beaches, if the prospecting mode would be a better choice with the SAT on super SAT.....Let me know if that works better...jim
