MXT and the DX-1 probe?

Hoosier

New member
Can anyone tell me if they use a Sunray DX-1 probe with their Whites MXT. Do they actually work as good as advertized with the MXT? I currently use a Whites Bullseye II that came with my detector and was just wondering if the DX-1 was worth the $$ or if I should just keep using the Bullseye and invest in a better coil instead. Thanks.

I LOVE my DX 1. Hands down the best probe for the $$$. It can be used in the Disc mode and works like a 1" coil without having extra battries to worry about going dead, If you look around on the diff forums or Ebay you can pick one up for $100- $150 used.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just trying to figure what to do, where my money would be better spent at this time. Do I spend $150+ on a good probe or $150+ on a 6x10 Eclipse DD coil. I know I could just solve my problem and get both but that will only happen if Santa gets a bonus!

The DX1 is a good pinpointer. Whether you should get It first would depend on what coils you have and what your ground is like. Also what is the reason you want the 6x10. There are reasons to use the DX1 but they all come after you located the target with the main coil. For example, if your ground is mineralized I would get the DD coil first. If I was hunting trashy areas and didn't have a small coil I would get it first. If you can't get both you have to decide which is the biggest need. Rob

How does one go about finding the mineral content in an area? I live in Northwest Indiana, rural countyside.

As per your question about the 6x10 Rob. From several responses concerning what coil to buy if I could have only one. I decided it would be the better than the standard 9.5 that came with the detector which seems to be disliked by many users.

Jeff Foster has a procedure in his book The MXT Edge. Here in North East Illinois my soil is pretty mild using his method. I have the 6x10 and it is a nice coil. It is lighter than the 9.5 and has a little more coverage per sweep than the 9.5. It is not as deep as the stock coil in my soil. It also does better in side to side separation of close targets. The 6x10 will out do the stock once you get in mineralized ground.

I think many guys must either have mineralized ground or are hunting trashy areas with the 9.5 which is too big for trashy areas. I have no problems with the stock coil here. It has good coverage , runs smooth on my MXT, and pinpoints right on. I use it in open sports fields and switch to a smaller coil if it is junky. Rob

I'd like to add my 2 bits here. I picked up a good deal on an MXT this summer it came with the 9.5, the 5.3 and the 4X6 coils plus the DX-1 probe. I LOVE the probe, LOVE the 4X6 in heavy trash, the 5.3 is good, don't care much for the 9.5. Purchased the 6X10 after a few weeks and like it MUCH better than the 9.5. At this point the 4X6 and the 6X10 are what I use 95% of the time. The 6X10 is my general hunting coil and the 4X6 is great in the heavy trash. Could get along quite well with just those 2 but will keep the others in my arsenal as backups or use when conditions warrant.
Happy holidays and dig deep,
Bill

I wouldn't be without my DX-1 with my MXT. My husband bought a used one a couple of years ago for me and it's the best thing since......sliced bread. OK, that's an old saying. But you know what I mean. It's like having a 1" detector and when digging deep coins, it will let you know where that coin, etc. is and no worries about scratching it with the digger, etc. It canbe used in any mode with the MXT. IMHO....Nancy

Wow! Thanks for all the helpful replies everyone. Sure helps make my decision easier. I talked to, and am waiting for a reply from, my town's street and water superintendant about this areas soil specs. With all the tests he does for the state and county he should be able to tell me exactly what is down there!

I don't know if this has been mentioned before. With the MXT and the DX-1 it is possible to desensitize the probe by clicking the pinpoint trigger 1-3 times and holding it down while pinpointing with the probe. This action reduces the "hot" area of the probe down to about 1" or less from the tip. Otherwise the probe is hot at a good 2+" from the tip. Anyway I wouldn't be without my DX-1.

At the city council meeting tonight I was advised that Northern Indiana, our area in particular is VERY low in mineralization. That's good news. I think I'll stick with the stock coil for now and go for the DX1. The city Director of Operations said he had many maps and charts showing soil properties around the area which will be handy if I venture far and help decide what coil to put on. Thanks again everyone.

I have one on my EXP II and would not be without it. My Son owns an MXT and we are going to get him one after Christmas. He was sold on mine when I helped him check his holes. Hew was surprised at the depth we were getting on that i" coil. This would be a good bet for you. HH...Jesse.

I am hearing nothing but bad things about the Bullseye II and its switch troubles. Before I read about the problems I was just going to keep mine and forget the DX-1 for now but maybe I should reconsider. I'll just have to hash it out for awhile.

For those who own one. What are the benefits, if any, of the optional side mount holder that is available for the DX-1? Only thing I could think of would be added weight or balance if attached to lower shaft.

I use the DX-1 on my MXT and I love it. I use only one clip to mount the probe on the detectors shaft and it works out just fine. It adds a little weight to the detector, but after having on the shaft for awhile I don't notice the added weight. I use the 6x10 coil quite a bit in open areas and my 6"DD Excelerator in trashy areas. My wife likes her 4.5x7 DD Excelerator. I have the White's pinpointer and I have never cared for it and my wife does not like it either . She does not use the DX-1 but I am trying to get her to try mine but she is happy with her Auto Max. Decisions,Decisions. Good luck with yours. HH Dennis in Idaho

The DX-1 is all of it. The only time it can be a pain is when you first get it, dig your plug and miss your target leaving it in the side. It is so sensitive that it can be hard to tell if it is in the side somewhere or still in the bottom of the hole. But with some practice it is not that hard to figure it out. Definitely worth the money, and talk about speeding up recovery, the absolute best!

I just but my DX-1 probe two weeks ago and I sure am glad I paid the extra $$$ for it. It sure has come in handy in the 4 or 5 times I've used it so far.

Thanks for all the information and replies, they were very helpful. I just finished ordering my DX-1 and can't wait for spring now so I can use it.

Now all I have to do is wait for the snow and frost to thaw. Can't wait to give my new addition a whirl!

Hoosier, Where did you get the stand for your MXT that I see in your picture? Thanks and HH TonyTX
