MXT and Pinpointing

You know, I'm just starting to get proficient and used to the MXT and the only thing I still don't like is how it pinpoints. I have the older stock 9.5 on this machine (its about 3 years old, but I've only had it about 4-5 months). I was using a Tesoro before I got this and the Tesoro pinpoints like a dream, with its smaller center hole. Is the pinpointing issue why people have to buy the expensive add-on DX-1 pinpointer? Seems to me that if Whites made like a 9" or 10" concentric spider coil with a smaller center hole that could pinpointer tighter, there would be no need for that add-on. Is the center hole on the Super 12 coil smaller than the one on the stock coil?

I know what you mean. I used and still have a Tesoro DeLeon. It pinpointed so well many times I have poped the coin out of the groud with a screwdriver without ever digging a hole. I love the way it pinpoints. I have recently gotten an M6 and it pinpoints completely different. No where near as good as the Tesoro. I really like the M6 so far, seems to id pretty well and seems to have plenty of depth. I am going to just keep using and hopefully I will get the hang of the pinpointing a little better.

on the MXT, try "de-tuning" the target ... hold the coil over the target, squeeze 3 quick trigger pulls, holding the last squeezed, swinging over target for a narrower pinppoint. Personally I love the VCO pinpointing, but I have found myself de-tuning a little with the 12" coil on deep targets.

Thanks for the idea on detuning. Do you lose any depth when detuning? Also, when I'm pinpointing I find the area of the target and then pull the trigger and look for the shallowest target, unless I'm finding multiple signals and then I try to puzzle out what its telling me. But, if it doesn't lose any real depth by detuning I'm willing to give it a try. Also, I tried to ask you about your 12" coil in another post. Are you talking about the Super 12, spider coil? How well is it working out for you in bad VA dirt?

I use the M6, same 9.5 coil as the MXT. Never used a Tesoro so wouldnt know how they pinpoint. I seen you mentioned, trouble pinpointing with multiple targets. That can be confusing with a larger coil however like Va Dave stated, use the pinpoint mode. Make your first pass and get a depth reading, then get just a tad bit off the target and squeeze your trigger a couple times (ratcheting) and your signal from the coil tightens up, smaller foot print. I dont think once you ratchet it gives an accurate depth reading,But, it doesnt loose any depth, two different things. Practice, its not difficult. But I also would like to add, if you are hunting in a site with many targets, invest in a smaller coil.

Bill,

I've noticed the same thing with my Tesoro as well. I think the MXT does pinpoint well, but as I mentioned in the post about the MXT and iron signals, I think we both need more time with the MXT. I've noticed a BIG difference in the use of my Tesoro over the use of the MXT. I've been using Tesoro's for years, so I am very familiar with how the "talk" and how they operate. My hunting buddy talked me into buying an MXT, so I'm in a very serious learning curve now trying to figure this MXT out. But a lot of it's my own fault since I don't get much time out in the field with it as I would like. My buddy has it pretty much mastered, but he's been using his longer than I have.

I have noticed that the MXT will pinpoint much better with the smaller coils. I have the 5.3 eclipse and the 6X10DD and they both pinpoint very well from my short experience with them. The 5.3 pinpoints like a champ. Try one of the other coils to see how you make out with them.

I haven't had much problem with the MXT pinpointing. However, I use the 6X10 DD and the smaller coils alot. As to the DX-1 it is really useful for small targets that have taken on the color of the soil, when a coin or other target is in the side of the hole and great when the coin is just barely under the surface, but doesn't show. I've used one sort of pinpointer or another for a few years now and while I can get along without them, I find my recovery time is much quicker with their help. Many say they don't need them - to each his own - but I really like them.

I have to laugh at this.
When I got the Ace 250 I had a hell of a time pinpointing with it
but everyone else said they had no problem at all. I eventually
got used to it.

I have an MXT and find pinpointing a piece of cake.:detecting:

Must have missed that post... I'm using the 12" HotShot

Nope, you didn't mispell it, I misunderstood. So, the 12" HotShot is good in bad ground? What kind of depth are getting on a minnie in bad ground with it?

The Hotshot on the XLT has performed pretty good in hot ground, but I have yet to get the MXT with its new HotShot in those kind of ground conditions and can only assume that the MXT's better tracking ability will offer the same if not better results.

I use the 4.5x7 and the 6x10 and the smaller coil is always dead on when pinpointing. I used to have a heck-of-a-time pinpointing. We hunt mainly old deserted homesites out here in New Mexico. Thus, the finds are pretty spaced out. Knowing my deficency in pinpointing I started hunting parks and soccer fields. After a couple of months of hunting clad my pinpointing skills have increased to the point that alot of time I probe the grass and hit the coin on the first probe. All in all I think its just practice, practice.

I purchased the DX-1 for convenience! Why waste time looking for a speck of iron if that's what it is. Dig grab dirt, Dig grab dirt, Swing over coil, Swing over coil. When I get a target I'm interested in I grab the DX-1 pinpoint the ground and make the smallest of hole to recover the target. Pull a plug and 80 percent of the time it'll be at the bottom of the hole. If the target is on the side I don't have to pull the detector over and sweep again. It's just a time saver. Also a turf saver. I've detected side be side with people without one and they leave what looks like a war zone with all their attempts to locate without one. I guess since I haven't used a detector with a smaller hole than the whites designed coil I guess I couldn't realize how much easier it would be to pinpoint. HH Rick
