MXT and Headphone Limiter compatibilty

mailman22

I have read that some headphone's limiter switches work and some don't. For instance , the Wasps by Killer B's is said to not work. Can anyone verify if this is so and what headphones with limiters in them DO work with the MXT?

I use Killer B's Wasp headphones. I didn't think mine were working properly. I sent them back to B&B distributors. They checked the limiter switch and said it was working. While on the phone the man said that the limiter circuit won't make any difference until the volume on the phones are turned up fairly high. I apparently have very good hearing because I keep my phone volume three or four clicks up from minimum. Any louder and the MXT's VCO hurts my ears. A lot.
Killer B Wasp phones are VERY comfortable and seem to be very well built. I like 'em a lot. But in my case the limiter circuit seems to be a non issue.

Thats what I heard. That the volume is loud. How about when pinpointing? I heard that you will go deaf if you don't turn volume down first. So what you are saying is that a limiter is not necessary?

Apparently the limiter switch works just fine if you need to have the volume controls on the headphones turned up. I don't need the volume turned up. I hear everything just fine with volume controls set very low. Yes, pinpointing(VCO)is loud on the MXT. Why? I don't know. That's one thing I don't like about the MXT. That and no backlight.
I don't have to turn the volume down when pinpointing. I already have the volume turned down for searching.

I am new (as writer) to this Forum, but being an MXT owner too :detecting: I red ALL the messages contained herein ( I learnt a lot reading, and I love the friendship of these messages).
What I have understood is that the "best renowned" headphone is the Sun Ray Pro, followed immediately by the Killer Bees Wasp. I also need this information, because I ordered the Sun Ray Pro some days ago in the UK (I live in Italy) but I have received today the Troy Pro. I know that also the Troy Pro are good headphones, but I have never read to have the noise limiter. I'll appreciate any answer helping me in the decision to keep or send back these headphones (also if I am in doubt I'll be never able to use the limiter due to the terrible amount of trash spread everywhere in the north-italic ground).

The Sun Ray pro's are, essentially, the Killer B Wasp. I own a set of the Killer B Wasps and I use them a great deal. They are one of my favorite, all-time headphone sets.

However, I favor the ruggedness and durability, as well as the audio and comfort, of my Troy Pro Headphones. The SunRay Pro's are very good, naturally, but if I had to pick between my Killer B Wasp & Troy Pro headphones, the Wasps wowuld have to go.

Fortunately, I have both and use both, depending upon the detector I have in hand and the site I am hunting.

Thank you Monte, for your reassuring answer ( I know you have years of experience in this field, while I'm a novice in spite of my sixtythree's....), ok, I'll keep the Troy Pro, postponing in the future the purchase oh another good headphone with the noise limiter (maybe cordless, hoping?). Anyway I believe that mailman22 question is still open....

I use nugget busters ndt with no limiter.when at gain setting 10-+3 turn volume controls down 2 clicks. At low gain settings 7-9 or lower turn them up max.hear every whisper.

Volume limiters are not an issue of whether you have good or bad hearing.
1 If you have a faint signal you can hear it better if you turn the volume up but a surface target would blow your ears.
2 If you turn your phones down you will protect your ears but will miss some faint signals.
3 In theory with a limiter, you should be able to turn your phones up to max to amplify the weakest signals but protect your ears on shallow targets or when pinpointing.
Try this when you get a real faint signal, turn your phones down a little. What happens? The signal is gone. You missed the target.
I haven't bought a new set of phones until I can find someone who has a set of phones that work the way they should in theory. Rob

I have a pair of K B Wasps and love them, I too, at first thought there was no difference when I flipped the switch but when I took it outside and used in a real hunting situation it about blasted my ears off. I use an MXT and wouldn't trade the pair for anything. Good luck and Happy Hunting.

I have sunray pro golds and my volume on my phones are all the way up and BOY are they loud on shallow targets! They do not seem too work. I have my DFX set up so that the shallow targets are the same lodness as all other targets. Modulation/ OFF, VCO/ON, ratchet PP/off, tone ID/ON. Sometimes I will have to flip the switch cause it is too loud.
