MXT and Gold

I'm a beginner still to buy my first detector. Whites detectors seem to be very popular and I think that's what I will end up buying.

I will be hunting 95% of the time for very small gold so I guess this narrows it down to a GMT or MXT. I am very confused as some say that the MXT uses the GMT
internals plus more to make it multi purpose. Then why is it said that an MXT is not as good at prospecting as the GMT?

Going through the forums it seems that a GMT would be my best option but the multi use of the MXT really appeals to me.

Is the MXT anywhere near to the GMT when it comes to prospecting?

Thanks for your help and hopefully someone my solve my dilemma.

I have partnered with a GMT and a Minelab 4000 in the field and the MXT outperformed both, for some reason. The added advantage of the MXT is the ability to hunt in 2 other modes, Coin and Jewelry, and Relic Modes. I am just as thrilled about finding a 90 or 80 year old coin as I am a small nugget in the desert. I would not opt for another detector as my primary detector. You will not be sorry in your purchase of a MXT. I have had mine for about 7 to 8 months now and most of the time, I was stuck in MI in the winter. I have now used it there, NV gold fields, and here now in northern CA. There is not a thing that I cannot detect with my MXT. Get the 6x9 dd coil and the 10 inch dd coils......jim

The MXT is a very good prospecting machine, I have both the MXT and the GMT they are both great machines the GMT will out perform the MXT. The MXT operates on 14 kHz and the GMT on 48 kHz, the GMT is designed for just gold hunting and will detect the tiny deep nuggets, while the MXT is a all purpose machine and only picks up nuggets around 6" deep but with that said most your gold is in shallow bedrock so I never need the depth. I just got back last night from Arizona and only hunted with the MXT I never use my GMT it stays in the truck. I came home with 124 grams that's all most 4 ounces. THAT DOES PAY FOR MY TRIP, and all found with my MXT in shallow sand and gravel. And I have the relic and coin mode if I come across a old ghost town or camp site. I also came home with one bad sunburn............:whites:.........:usaflag:..............

Jim's right you need the 6 X 10 DD to make it a real gold getter.
