MXT and bottlecaps?

The MXT loves bottlecaps and with a solid signal with a jumpy vdi. Is that a sign of a not to dig with the vdi doing that? They ring up in the penny dime. I never had that problem with the XLT. I'm sure this has Been posted but I'm kinda new here. I've only had about 6 hours on the MXT and with the 10"DD. I see MXT edge in my future. I do like the ease of operation with MXT compared to the XLT. Thanks

A high but jumpy VDI is one possible sign of a bottlecap. The "test" is to slowly pull off your target as you swing the coil back and forth over it. Just as the edge of the coil reaches the target the signal will suddenly drop to iron with a bottlecap. If it's a quarter it will drop off a lot more gradually. Pretty good test that seems to work every time I check. But then again, to test the "test" you have to dig up the target anyway. Really good for bottle cap infested areas. Try it out and good luck.

Most detectors will pick up bottle cap's as coins but the coil will make a difference sometimes . I have several coils and the 10 inch DD is a lot worse than my other ones are on picking up those bottle caps . It really loves the older metal beer caps . After awhile you will learn the sound of them and be able to avoid some of them but its hard to do with that coil . Good hunting

It's a problem with most motion-based discriminators, especially a lot of slower sweep, quick-response types. Some models have a more difficult time than others, and a good nit depends upon the search coil, used and, to a different degree, the operating frequency and processing type, and whether it is an analog or digital design.

As an example, the White's Classic ID or IDX Pro, to name two, do quite well in bottle-cap infested sites compared with a lot of other models.

Oh, the XLT had a problem of sorts with them, but it followed on the heals of the 5900/6000 Di models and they incorporated a very good bottle-cap reject audio process. The XLT did also.

Well, you'll find as lot of help here as time goes by and you gain more experience. I, too, like the MXT and MXT Pro for many detecting applications, but for some types of hunting, such as 'cruising' the open grassy parks and such, I prefer the XLT. I especially like the XLT w/8" for day-to-day use, and the 6

Scott is right about the "edging techinique". I use it and it works . . . . . a VDI for a BC will most often drop toward a quick negative VDI reading when "edged". This is mentioned in Chapter 6 p.36 of "THE MXT EDGE" Bear is also right because based on my little MDting experience, the BCs make different sounds than coins do. Maybe this is easier for me because of the MXT Pro's tone ID features ?? IMHO, I have found that practice and by combining these two mentioned nuggets of info MAY eliminate the uncessary digging of most BCs. But then again........ you NEVER know for sure !!! LOL. CCH

Thanks for the input y'all. The mxt edge says the same thing when it comes to bottlecaps. I switched to the stock 300 coil and it felt normal and it target ID on the spot. If it said bottlecap it was bottlecap, zincoln it was zinc and etc. So I feel alot better now lol. Next will be to get a smaller concentric coil like the 5.3 which I hear good things about. I'll post the pictures of our finds from this weekend silver coins, wheat's, tokens, dog tags, silver belt buckle from a 100 year old yard. It was a rare good hunt !

Man try just hunting in canada for modern change. You have to dig those bottlecaps-they act alot like are new clad coins.Loonies are terrible on my big bud read all over the place and likes to hit as foil most of the swings.Im not sure what the toonies and loonies are like on my mxt yet...still have not found any or swung over any with my machine lol maybe should try that....

How you likin' that 6" Excellerator? Looks like you guys are getting some pretty nice weather in AB. It kinda sux right now in Abbotsford. Rain, rain and.. a bit more rain. ..Willy.

I wasn't aware of that Rob. I use DD's almost exclusively and the DO love tose *#$& things. I understand the differences between the concentrics search field and the DD's but I didn't realize there was a difference on the bottlecap ID's. Can you elaborate ? Thanks.

I do not know the technical reason for DD coils loving Bottle caps, Maybe others would know more
.
my experienced with DD coils on all my machines over the years even with other manufactures, they all love Bottle caps

Hunting your Local Park (which are loaded with Bottle caps)

The DD coil will drive me nuts so I prefer the 950 coil in the type of hunt,

Looking for deep coins in a old home stead or beach and relic hunting I would want the DD coil

Do a search on here on DD coils to find more info

Thanks for that Rob. I'll look into that. I have not been hunting that long so my experience with other makes, coil types, etc is limited. I do use my concentric coils in some hunting situations but I find myself going to the DD's most of the time. Maybe it's time to really give them a shot. Thanks again
