MXT adjusting Threshold Hum question?

George W

New member
Hello,
I was able to pry the MXT from my wife's hands and I find I have a question about the Threshold.. OK I'm in the coin Jewelry Program I set the tracking switch to Ground and turn on unit and rotate the gain till it's at the default mark. I set my discrimination till it hits the first preset mark and ground balance by pumpping the coil up and down a few times over clean ground.. Now I adjust the Threshold hum.. I find if it's set to low I still can hear it more then I want too and if I lower it it gets a bit unsteady way before the point it adjusted so you just can't hear it.. if I go the other way with the Threshold it makes the hum louder then I would like but it seems to smooth it out so it's a steady hum.. Does this sound normal? Threshold is at about or slightly more them half way or at a little more then the 12:00 position to be smooth.. I find if i run the gain down to about 6 then threshold is smooth at any position I run the knob from soft to loud.. Is this ok? George

This one is a personal thing. I looked and mine is short of 12:00, maybe closer to 11:00. I run my disc at just above 2 and you run the preset both are OK it's what we like. I tolerate higher than preset gain and you don't. If you make good finds it sounds good to me. Rob

So are you saying it's ok for the Threshold hum to be unsteady and unsmooth? When I was using her MXT I did have the gain set to it's preset and would run it there unless I get or keep getting overloads.. It's just the Threshold hum that I seem to be little uncomfortable with..George

George, I am no expert or anything....but for my 2cents....I run mine in the quite mode or just a little past the unstable area you are talking about....some like to hear the hum..I don't....and I still have a nice collection of rings and coins.....Ray

George,

The way you adjusted your machine using the gain to level out the threshold wobble is just the way it is said to adjust your machine in the book "THE MXT EDGE". I'm no expert either, but I do listen to what I read. I would recommend you getting the book. Some people said they didn't get anything out of it. I learned a lot, I remembered the anwser to your question......

I also run mine in the quite mode the only noise I want to here is a target, and I do find coins, jewelry and gold nuggets

DC, and everyone Thanks! But DC You explain what I'm hearing in the Threshold hum really well when you said (threshold wobble) It's hard for me to use the unit for any length of time to get use to it.. It's my wife's and she don't like my DFX so I just give her MXT back to her after 10 mins or so.. I just need to know if it's set up right? I can get out the Wobble sound like you said if I turn down the gain I think preset it a little past 9 9 1/2 I think and if I turn it down to 8 or 9 it will smooth out quit well.. But will a little wobble sounding threshold hurt anything as far as targets go? I prefer maximum depth at some places I hunt.. The only issue I can see with her using the MXT so far is she somehow hits the gain and I always find it at 5 or 6.. She is unaware she's doing it.. I'll just suggest to her she cheek it every so often..
I'm not sure on the Book yet.. For my DFX I think the Digging Deeper Book was great and a must have for any DFX user.. But she's not the type of gal that learns from manuals or books she feel much better just learning by doing especially with Metal detecting.. With only a few adjustments on the MXT I'm not going to push on the Edge Book.. I feel that there's a lot of in general stuff that pertains to all Metal detecting in Jeff's DD book jimmy's Book that can be used with the MXT.. I would like to read a copy of the the Edge book for myself though even just enough of it to See if It's want it or not, IMO there is not enough info at Jeff's web site to make me buy it right away.. I am the type that if I'm reading about detecting I'm detecting if you know what I mean.. I would like to see how much could be said about the few controls on the MXT in his book.. Any more info would be great! I think it's a easy unit to learn if I can only get my hands on it long enough LOL!!Thank you all! George
PS I have not had her try the Silent search on the MXT yet mostly in fear of her hitting the knob and lowering it to the point of being useless.. I have tried my DFX in silent search mode and I do like it that way though for some reason I run with the threshold hum..

George,

Sometime adjusting the gain to a lower level will stabilize the machine. It's because you maybe in unstable ground area. I have found that even if I try to ground balance the machine again, it still does the same thing. Once I back off on the gain, it gets stable. I don't think you will lose that much when it comes to how deep you are shooting. I've still done well after adjusting to lower gain, but then again what does it matter if you are not getting clear signals. I hope this helps you out.
