MXT 300 headphones

That's always a possibility, but I've encountered that problem several times with broken or bad connections in the headphone wires. If the headphones are fine on another machine or a stereo or any other device where you can test them, then the headphone jack and its connections would look very likely.

The headphone jack has been know to seperate from the PC board.
