MXT 300 For the wife someone with both DFX&MXT

George W

New member
We are thinking of pulling the trigger on a New MXT 300 for the wife.. Price is $779 and comes with soft case, Whites Bullseye pin pointer and Head set.. Is this a good deal? I have the DFX and have used it for 3 years and do like it.. I have no learning issues and kind of like the ability to adjust everything..But that's just the way I am. The wife on the other hand don't and had seen me fuss with my DFX all this time and is not willing to get one for her self because of all the fuss.. I tried to tell her you can just tun it on and go, load a factory program or one of my custom programs and just GB.. No she won't have it..

I would like to know if and how you adjust the volume, how you GB it, is it really any easier to use then the DFX? Any help would be great.. I guess I really need to under stand the MXT for myself.. The wife has never detected before.. I offered to let her use my DFX but she wants her own and don't want or need to learn the DXF is her thinking.. Again I guess I need to learn more about the MXT before pulling the trigger on one.. Thanks! George

Look at a M6 for her simple to use and great depth..

Go to the white's website and check the video section. There are instructions for both the MXT and the M6. If she does get the MXT she is going to whup up on ya. LOL  HH Dennis in Idaho

Unless you are going to hunt wide open spaces the 12" is going to be too big for parks and schools. It isn't going to work unless it is not trashy. By the way what coils do you use with the DFX? I think the 9.5 is big enough to begin with. Are you planning to buy other coils or is she going to use one of your coils.

I like my MXT but if she is only going to coin shoot in parks and schools etc, the M6 might not be a bad idea. It should go for about $600 plus.

On the MXT you adjust the threshold volume by simply turning the threshold knob. To GB just leave the toggle in ground and raise up and down 4 - 6 times and it is good to go. There is no volume control. You need a control on the headphones. The MXT is loud.

Basically, to start detecting, set the mode switch to C/J or relic, turn the disc to preset, turn the gain to preset, turn the threshold to a low hum, set the toggle to ground pump up and down and detect. As Dennis says read the manual.

I'm sure Nancy will post. She has an MXT and her husband Larry has a DFX. Rob

Rob,
Thanks for the great reply and info... I use the 8X14 DD on my DFX most of the time and also have the 6X10 DD and almost never use my stock DFX coil.. I beach hunt most of the time and find the 1400 DD works great in fields too.. I looked at the videos on both the MXT and M6 and it looks like the M6 has most of the features of the MXT except for the threshold knob.. That was the first thing my wife said, that she would use my stock coil to keep the weight down on the unit but this would add a new coil to our mix.. So still up in the air on this.. George

Dennis,
Why would me wife whup me with if I decide to go with the MXT? LOL!!! looks easy to use too! George

cosmic,
Yes I have not totally ruled the M6 out after checking out the videos but it's still hard to decide.. I have no Dealers within over 100 miles of to check them out in hand.. Thank you for your help! George

I like the M6..I have had 6 different detectors in the past year mid to high end..I have 2 M6's now!!

cosmic,
Thanks! Great finds and love the slide show!! Yep still thinking on it for sure.. The wife and I are talking it over and hope to make a decision soon.. Can't decide what would push us one way or the other.. With my DFX It's it was easy for me as I like the adjust-ability of it, and for me that's half the fun till I get detecting that is.. Hard choice though.. George

George, since you have a 9.5 for her to use then the 12" is not a bad idea. As you said that would give you one more coil size. While you are using the 8x14 on the beach she could use the 6x10. I like the 9.5 in my soil and it is deeper than the 6x10 but if I don't need the depth the 6x10 works better in trashy parks and school grounds.

Here's some comments from Jeff Foster

The 6x10 DD coil did much better in the EMI tests on the MXT than it did on the DFX. This was the big surprise for me and this anecdotally seems to be consistent with more glowing comments on this coil from MXT users than from DFX users.

The 9.5 inch coil appears to outperform the 6x10DD in ferrous mineralization up to about a 4 to 3 MXT coin-inch mineralization strength. For stronger soil, the 6x10DD outperforms the 9.5 for coin-sized targets. (But, the 1400DD easily out does both in mineralization this bad, for coin-sized targets.)

The M6 is a silent search detector and the MXT is threshold based. It is basically an MXT without the relic and prospecting modes. It uses the same internal engine and ground trcking as the MXT. The M6 does have a tones system for coin hunting. As far as I know the M6 can't be ordered with the 12". there is a DFX 300 and a MXT300 but no M6 300. Rob

Here's my 2 cents. IF she is really interested in metal detecting, I would definitely get the MXT. It's a turn on go machine that ranks up there with the DFX except it doesn't come with the headaches when you first turn it on. You know....right after purchasing it. My hubby has the DFX and yes, I've tried it and didn't like it. Anyway, when your wife gets to know the MXT a bit better, she will want to hunt deep target sites besides the playgrounds, etc. That might take a while too....It did me. I loved to do the parks, playgrounds, etc. But also that's a great way to get to know your machine. Pinpoint, etc. The MXT is excellent on pinpointing. I honestly can't say enough about the MXT. The MXT comes with the 9.5 coil and is easy to swing unlike the big 12" coil with the other detector.

It's a turn on, go machine!!!! Can't state that enough

I started off with a cheap Bounty Hunter and it paid for itself many many times over. Then Larry got his brother's OLD White's Liberty DI for me (thought I was weight lifting). Then he bought me the MXT (finally) for my birthday. It's the best gift (and keeps on giving) and if I can understand it, anyone can. It's that simple. I'm not one for the technical terms, but can get my point across in layman's terms. One other thing...We've got a great group of people here on the forum that will lend a helping hand with your questions, etc.

IMHO I wouldn't give it another thought. MXT all the way. HH to all, Nancy

:thumbup:Rob your right! I guess I am really over thinking I had been doing nothing be reading about the two models all day.. Again your right, In fact the M6 does not come in a M6 300 package with the 12" coil.. Also I like the threshold on my DFX detector it kind a gives me a hint on what's to come in trashy areas.. I like hearing it! So I think it's going to be the MXT and I think because of the offer only with the MXT 300 with the added accessories that's what we'll get! That package comes with the soft case " some protection" and a head set also a Whites Bullseye II.. with the 12" coil.. My wife will use my 950 in it or the 6x8 DD it's just as light and it's $779 shipped.. Rob or Nancy One thing I thought of I can ask you two.. Does the MXT have the tone system for coin jewelry mode? Nancy your reply really helped me.. You sounded just like my wife in your way of thinking.. Thank you Nancy.. The wife's in bed wight now but I'll have her reply to you tomorrow. I think you can really help her out.. Thank you all!! George:thumbup:

No the mxt does not have the tone system like the M6. Rob

Rob
So then she will just have to rely on reading the display I guess.. I don't think that should be a issue.. I'm going to see if I can setup my DFX as close as I can to the MXT and get her hunting even for a few hours hopefully tomorrow.. It will give her the feel for the hobby.. I'll make sure to put on a light coil..But I'm glad she has interest in it.. Thanks! George

:biggrin:Us gals have to stick together you know. George, I've been there and I think I know exactly what your wife is thinking. Don't be disappointed if she doesn't even want to try your DFX after you program it to be similar to the MXT. Hey, it WON'T be hers. She can contact me anytime. I have a feeling she'll love the MXT even without the tone I.D. That is one thing I do miss, but it's nothing to check the VDI screen.

WARNING: If you do get the MXT, don't be surprised if she can keep up with you or even excel in finds!!!!!!! Believe me, it DOES happen! :bouncy:

HH to all, Nancy

I started my wife off detecting with another name brand detector with an 8inch coil and things did not go so well. She did not like the balance and she thought the coil was to heavy. I was using an MXT at the time and I was not sure how she would do with it, but I found a near new MXT for sale and got it for her. She took off like a duck to water (turn on and go). I was using the 4.5x7 DD Excelerator at the time so I put it on her MXT to start her out. She loved the coils light weight and now it never comes off her detector. When I try to get her to use the 6x10 she bows her neck, and says she is happy with the way things are. I can't for the life of me understand why any man would even suggest that his wife use the 12" coil when starting out. It is heavier than most coils, not as heavy as the 1400DD but heavy none the less. I think having to swing either of those coils all day would take the fun out of detecting for the wife unless she is a weight lifter. I have friends who complain about heavy coils especially the 1400DD and they will not swing it for very long before it gets taken off for a much lighter one like the 6x10 or smaller .If I put either of these coils on my wife's detector I am afraid that I would have her MXT's stem wrapped around my neck. The way I feel is if she likes the setup then she is going to be more inclined to go out with me for some day long detecting. And yes she does whup up on me from time to time but I don't care to discuss that.LOL. JMHO. HH Dennis in Idaho

Hi Nancy...I am George's wife and it was nice to hear from another wife that actually uses a detector. I have watched George use his DFX nad really didn't want to try it as it seems complicated and really didn't think of getting "my own" machine. Still not sure about it for obvious reasons (money!!) but have been doing some looking on the web sites and reading about different machines and the MXT seems to be the best for what I would want to do...don't want it too complicated and heavy so...thanks for your 2 pennies worth from George's wife, Penny!

You will like the MXT my daughter really likes hers she uses the 4 x 6 Eclipse. I like the 6 X 10 DD the best and the 4.5 X 7 Excelerator for those trashy areas. Can't get the wife interested, she would rather shop. Good luck on your new MXT purchase, but go with a smaller coil.

I would get the regular MXT and save the extra money for a 6x10.

Hi Penny, I love your name. If you would get a detector, the MXT is a bit pricey, but I would bet that you'll never want for another machine. Well, maybe in about 10 yrs. or so depending on new technology in the future. But for now, I couldn't see you going wrong with the MXT. Even the resale is quite high if you would decide that you don't like it. Just can't see that happening. I know it's quite a big hunk of change, but well worth every "penny", Penny. ;) And another thing......you can't put a price on being out with your hubby enjoying the same hobby. He has had a DFX for 7 years and before that.....many White's detectors. Larry and I got married a bit over 5 yrs. ago and we've been "beepin' buddies" 9 years. PRICELESS!!!!!!! You take care and do what your heart tells you to do. HH to all, Nancy
