MXT 300 - Coil Question

New member
It is my understanding that the 12" coil that comes with the MXT 300 will go deeper (relic hunting) than say the 9.5" coil that comes on the MXT. Is this true?

Also, for those of you who have the MXT 300, what would be the next coil that you would buy? Something to help weed out trash I assume? I'd like to be able to hunt the trashy sites but not give up much depth.

Thanks for all your help. You guys know your stuff!

P.S. I didn't see the link for the coils at the top of this forum so I'll check that out. In the meantime, all replies are gratefully appreciated.

The 12" will go deeper, but is more sensitive to trash with its larger scan area.

Depending on soil mineralization, the 5.3 Eclipse would be my choice. Here in Wisconsin it seems to work fine.

I've got the 5.3 and use it on my modified IDX. I just leave it on all the time. I use a 6" excelerator on my MXT and it is now my go to small coil. It gets good separation, good depth and can handle the mineralized ground if you need it. Give the 6" a look. Rob

My second coil is the 10'' D2 and i love it. I have had some real good finds with it and can swing it all day without getting arm weary. Depth is good, however its still a hot coil around those tot lot swings, etc. Just depends on what kind of hunting you will doing.

I have the MXT 300 and after my first hunt I bought the 5.3 coil. I still have not used the 300 since; too much trash where I hunt!

I purchased the 4x6 Eclipse at the same time as my MXT300, for trashy areas and tot lots. I'd been thinking of an in between coil, and after reading all the good reviews and how well it separates, have ordered the 10" D2. If it does as well as I've read, it will probably become my main coil for open field and light to moderate trashy sites. The Super 12 may get a bit more depth in my low mineralized soil, but only if you overlap swings very close together. With the "wiper blade" signal of the D2, I think I'll find it much more suitable for my type of hunting.

As you mention weeding out the trashy sites, I'll put my two bits on that. I have both the White's 5.3 and the 4X6. For most trashy sites the 5.3 is fine and it gets surprising depth and fairly good coverage. If you often find yourself hunting in really trashy sites, I like the 4X6 as it really does the job there, although at the loss of coverage and some loss of depth. If you read through the forums you'll see a lot of good comments about the Excellerator coils from Kellyco as well. They offer a 4.5X7 that is supposed to be very good in heavy trash, but I haven't had the chance to try one.

I have a 4.5 X 7 EXcelerator and it works great in the heavy trash areas, and it also has great depth........

Bob - have you ever had the opportunity to use the 4X6 and the 4.5X7, both? Wondering if there is enough difference to make me consider trading the 4X6? It really shines at separating the goodies out of the trash, but a little more depth wouldn't hurt.

I use the 6x10 DD. Its my most used coil. Good depth, good in moderate trash. I have the 12", 6x10"dd, 4"X 6"dd and they all get used depending on the site I'm hunting. Dave

To me they are about the same in trashy areas and depth, but with the 4.5 X 7 you get a little more coverage but not enough to trade.........

Hey Bob - What sort of depth are you getting with the 4.5 X 7? I know of course there are a bunch of variables but bottom line - how much depth did you lose with this coil verses the stock coil?

About 8 inches with good signals, some times a little deeper depending on the soil condition........

lol. 3 1/2 years! You could have a baby, potty train him and teach him to swing a metal detector in the time gap between the last 2 comments. The MXT Pro was not even released yet.
Just pickin on ya. :-D

I've found the 12" 300 coil is very good for beaches wet and dry just remember to GB. The 4x6 eclipse DD is good in tot lots, parks unless heavy trash then go to the 3x4 small dd coil. MXT300 coil head lamp and night digger when hot. HH
