Quick question: Does the MX7 have an audible threshold in disc mode like the MX5?
It's the operator's call as to what they will hear from Accepted or Rejected targets as well as Search Audio with the MX-7.
► First, the operator determines if they want to have Silent Search or hear an Audible Threshold. As mentioned below, that is adjusted either via the options method to get to
Threshold and adjust '00' for Silent Search, or select anything from '01' to '20' to find a Threshold audio you prefer. The fastest way to select this audio option is while detecting. Just use the left-side ▲ and ▼ buttons which give instant access to the
Threshold setting desired, from '00' for silent search to a comfortable Threshold audio from '01' or greater.
Additionally, the operator can choose to hear, or not hear, targets that are Discriminated by using the
Reject Volume selector accessed via the Options button. If you use the
+ and
- buttons to set the
Reject Volume to a setting of '00' then you will not hear an audible 'Beep' from an object that has been Discriminated, but there are actually some audible responses you might hear with a
Reject Volume setting of '00' based on either a Silent Search or audible Threshold search, and those are:
Silent Search without hearing Discriminated Targets: Use a '00'
Threshold setting for no Threshold sound, and a
Reject Volume setting of '00' to eliminate any audio from rejected
(Discriminated) targets and set the Discrimination level to reject all the lower-conductive targets you do not want to find, such as ferrous targets and possibly small, lower-conductive foil.
Silent Search but hearing Discriminated Targets: Set the same level of
Discrimination and use a '00' setting for no audible
Threshold sound. Adjust the
Reject Volume to a desired level such as '10' or '20', etc. to
add an audio response from
Rejected or Discriminated targets but assign them a lower
Volume level. That way you can hear the presence of rejected junk that could cause good-target masking, but it will not be a loud audio 'Beep', juts a low Volume-level response.
Threshold Audio Search while hearing a 'nulling' for Discriminated Targets: This is the old familiar audio response we can hear by searching with an audible
Threshold level of '01' or greater, and using some Discrimination to reject unwanted targets, such as nails and other iron debris. If the
Reject Volume level is set to '00' for 'Off,' then we will
not hear a positive response from unwanted targets, however, we can hear the Threshold audio null, or go silent, when we encounter Rejected Trash. This is a 'traditional' type of search with a 'conventional' Threshold hum nulling-esponse for Discriminated targets.
Threshold Audio Search with a positive but low-Volume response from Discriminated Targets: This search method combines the 'old fashioned' or 'traditional' search method of using a low but comfortable
Threshold audio of '01' or a higher settings, combined with the 'modern' desire to still hear Discriminated/Rejected targets rather than nulling out on them. Without any
Reject Volume, a setting of '00' for 'Off,' you can still hunt with a desired Threshold but also hear trash targets
(Discriminated) by assigning a lower loudness level to them by using the
Reject Volume level of '10' or '20' or whatever reduced volume level you are comfortable with for the Discriminated, aka Rejected, targets.
► More experienced Detectorists familiar with working with a
Threshold and listening for the nulling-effect of Discriminated targets might appreciate the audio selectability of the MX-7
(and MX-Sport) should they choose to opt for an audile
Threshold during a search by using the quick-access ▲ and ▼ membrane switches. Hunt with or without a Threshold and quickly change to the other option 'on-the-fly' to get a different audio picture of the ground and targets present, and be able to have a different response from the presence of Discriminated/Rejected Targets based upon the
Reject Volume level that would be set at 'Off'
('00') to whatever lower-Volume level you desire
('10' to '70') from Rejected Targets.
Most detectors on the market do not give you these audio search options, which is just one reason I like what the MX-7's offer.
