MX7 finds silver

I just received my MX7 Tuesday. Today I took it out for a short hunt at a local school field. I found 4 quarters, 2dimes, 1 nickel, 2 zinc pennies and 1 copper penny. One of the dimes was a 1964 Rosie. The 64 Rosie was about 6" down in the ground. I was using the 6x10 Sport coil. I was pleased with the machines performance. Here are the settings that I was using:

I forgot discrimination. Discrimination was set to reject VDIs 5 and lower.

I haven't chanced upon any silver, yet, but this past week has been very cold with heavy frost and the ground is freezing up. The inversion has arrived and it is very foggy out there but it's warmed up to 25°. Mont Jr. sent me some photos of sidewalk renovation and I'm taking the MX-7 w/6½ Inch C. to check it out in about an hour or so when it gets light. Hopefully it isn't too cold, for me, or ground too frozen, for detecting & digging, and I might land one more silver coin before the year ends.

You're over on that warmer and wetter side of the state and I hope you have more huntable weather to get out some more.

Even if a '64, Congrats! Silver is silver.

I still like my MX5 a lot, and I am not getting rid of it. I really haven't decided which one I like better. I like the tones on the MX5 better than the MX7. They just sound sharper and crisper to me. On the MX7 the tones seem to be more softer or muted. It has good volume but the tones are softer to me, if that makes sense. The MX7 seems to go a little deeper, but not by much. Not enough to make a big difference. I like the coil choices for the MX5 and MXT over the MX7. There are a lot more coils to choose from right now. Monte said that Whites is coming out with the 5.3 eclipse coil for the MX7 and Sport. Hopefully Whites will be adding even more coils to the Sport lineup. I would like to see them come out with the 9" spider coil for the MX7 and Sport. The 9.5 coil and 6x10 coil are too heavy for me to swing for very long. The MX7 has more menu options and features than the MX5, and the headphone jack is in the rear, but that never bothered me on the MX5. You can lock the tracking on the MX7, but for the type of hunting that I do, I never found that to be a problem on the MX5.

Anyway, to sum it up, I like the MX7, but I'm not sure that I like it more than the MX5 and MXT Pro. Time will tell as I use it more and get used to it.

Congrats JEF! Nothing like finding some silver, especially with a new detector. I really like hunting in 8 tones with my MX Sport as well.

Thanks for the reply, I like my MX5 because of it's fast recovery in iron when using 1 tone and the first 3 iron segments notched out. I use the 2 tone with all metal accept to find the iron and use the 1 tone to sift through it when the iron is too thick. I have also noticed that it has a sharp high tone report using 2 tone and that is a great aid to finding nice keepers in the iron trash that is making machine gun low tones.
