MX7 battery pack not locking

dfmike

Well-known member
Hi. I just bought an MX7 and the battery pack will not lock inside the detector compartment. It will slide inside fairly easy but even if I push it completely inside, the 2 buttons on each side do nothing to eject the pack (not engaged). There is no clicking sound as if it is firmly "seated". The detector works as it should anyway but removing the pack can't be done with those 2 buttons (battery retainer buttons as per the manual). Is this a known issue ? Anything I can do or try before I contact the dealer ?

Thank you.

Mike, The battery tray does slide in easily, but use the heel of your hand and firmly 'bump' the battery tray to seat it completely.

I hope you enjoy the MX-7, and learn the different Tone ID options, especially if working in an area plagued by nails and other ferrous trash. Of course up there in Canada that can include a lot of your nickel or steel coins. :( In a really trash-free area when Coin Hunting down here in the USA, places such as a grassy park or school lawn, I might sometimes use the 8-Tone option. Most of the time I prefer to hunt with the MX-7 using the 4-Tone function.

But when working in dense iron debris areas such as ghost towns, homesteads, and similar challenges, I set my RejVol at '10', accept the upper factory preset rejected segment, and use 2-Tone to get the best sharp audio response. With a lot of nails and other ferrous trash close to and/or under the coil, 4-Tone can have a less-than-pleasant low to low-mid audio tone due to very closely associated good coins and bad iron junk. The 2-Tone function helps the better targets stand out.

Oh, one more thing. I have preferred to run most of my detectors at or very near the highest Sensitivity setting for a long time, but due to the hot performance of some makes and models, and that includes both the White's MX-5 and MX-7, especially, don't hesitate to lower the Sensitivity to the '00' to '04' level to reduce interference from densely contaminated sites. Usually I keep my MX-7's Sensitivity set at '08' for start up and most hunting, but working in a heavily nail infested site I really get the benefit in performance by reducing the Sensitivity ... a lot.

And be sure to keep the search coil ±2" off the ground to reduce or eliminate overloading. My Nokta CoRe models, my Nokta Relic, and my White's XLT, modified Classic ID and MX-5 are going nowhere as they are all excellent performers and have their strengths, and I can assure you, my MX-7 isn't parting company anytime soon, either. It's my most-used White's model.

The MX5 has the same design of battery pack and needs to be 'gently' slapped into place.:punch:

Thanks guys. It worked but I have to push on it like the dickens. It should be easier than this. When I press one of the release buttons,it pops out very slightly but not enough so I can pull the holder by hand. I have to use a small phillips screwdriver to gently pry the tray out !

I read the manual but it is unclear to me how this detector ground balances. They don't mention pumping the coil. I understand the MX7 tracks the ground continuously ? Should I lock tracking once it is set or leave it on tracking ?

Thanks for the help Monte. I practiced in the back yard with 4 tone coin and jewelry mode SENS at 04 or 05. I left AUD at 00. I think that means non VCO. There is nothing to find here anymore but I can't go out with it before the weekend. I buried a few items and checked the ID. Everything seems to work fine. I forgot how easy it was to pinpoint with a concentric coil with a nice round donut in the middle. I haven't used a concentric in years. I don't intend to use the MX7 in super trashy areas even if I get a DD coil for it somewhere down the road. I have my CoRe for that and it separates like nothing I have used so far.

I wanted to try a Whites detector and this is it. I've always had a soft spot for nice LCD displays and I like this one a lot. I like the increased mid and high conductor resolution and a few other things as well.

The battery pack needs to be gently slammed into the case to lock it. The AUD that you are referring to is whether you want modulated audio or full strength audio on targets, I suggest that your setting at 00 is best, I found that the MX7 is deeper in that setting.

I run C&J program ....2 tone audio.... Disc. set to accept -40 through +95, AUDMOd at 00, Sensitivity at 8, Threshold at 2, REJVOL at 10 or 20, VOLUME set at 30, then adjusted by headphone to a comfortable level. GROUND BALANCE I find a quiet piece of ground by using the PINPOINT button to assure no metal is under the coil, then go back to DISC. mode and hold TRACK button in and pump the coil up and down a few times then "lock" it.

I usually hunt in old places such as torn down old school houses or torn down old churches ...pick nick grounds, cellar holes and just generally trashy sites. For this type of hunting I use a smaller concentric coil and the MX7 Six Shooter coil is a dandy, it measures 6½" in diameter. This coil really unmasks like no other detector that I have used except for some Tesoro non metered detectors.

Thanks Hombre. I appreciate the detailed post on your settings. The coin and jewelry program is set to reject anything in the minus category I believe. You set your disc to accept a greater range of targets in the iron category ?

Yes, I like to hear the iron and accept -40 to +95 & with REJVOL set at either 10 or 20 so I can hear it,,,then I can maneuver through the iron. Of course this is my preference only and I may set the Disc. to reject more negative numbers in some places with massive amounts of iron.. The thing is, I like to explore all the settings available and to find out what works in my ground. The reset back to factory settings is easy.......The Six Shooter coil is the way to go when dealing with iron and these settings work well at unmasking non ferrous from ferrous targets.
