MX5 with a Detech Ultimate 13" DD Coil

L.A.R.T

I got this new coil for Xmas to make my MX5 a relic hunter as well as a coin shooter. I'm searching in the Midwest so mineralization isn't too bad. I'm new to detecting as a whole but I keep reading posts about setting a MX5 up with a new coil. Any tips or suggestions on what setting to use to get the ultimate depth on my detector. I really like my MX5 so I purchased a new coil instead of spending more than I have on a higher quality machine . Any tips would be appreciated.

I have been detecting for about a year now and just got a MX5. I took it out yesterday and figured out i have a lot to learn about detecting and the MX5. I really like it and it will take me some time to learn the tones and settings. It would be great to have an experienced detector to hunt with. I had a eurotek pro and this is a big step up.

Hi guys, I also own the MX5 and now always have the 13" coil on it. Just remember to put the MX5 in Stand-by mode before extracting your target and you won't get any interference.

Welcome to the MX5 club guys. Read the manaul at least twice. Try all metal mode to locate your targets then switch to decrimanate to check them out. If you are in a high trash area you can run in decrimanate with as little as possible notched out. Most of the post mention notching out the bottom 3 or 4 to knock out iron if you are searching for coins and jewlery. My most common settings are 8 on the sensitivity, 75 or higher on the volume, 2 or 8 tones, and 15 to 20 on the threshold. Nickles will fool you by coming in lower than 20 on the scale. I found had them come in at 14-18 often. Small gold and charms can come in low in the 6 to 10 range, usually repeatable but can jump around the deeper they are. The MX5 will go deep. I have found silver dimes at 8 ito 9 inches with a solid repeatable high 70s reading. For trash areas either the 5.3 coil or the 4x6 Shooter coil is the ticket to hitting the good targets. A good pin pointer comes in handy, and just put the detector in suspend mode while you dig your find.
Happy Hunting and Happy New Year.

Thanks MattBull! Yeah I'm new to MDing but I've got a coworker and friend who has taken me under his wing. He helps with technique and theory but he's a Teknetics guy, so his White's knowledge is limited.

I've had the Ultimate 13 on my MX5 for a few months and it works great, but if you run the sensitivity too high and bump anything, it will sound off.
