MX5 vs. M-6

Anyone have an opinion? Is the MX5 superior, newer technology or is it essentially the M-6 in a plastic case with a few extra features?

To put it another way, would it make sense to unload an M-6 to pick up an MX5?

Someone said "It's the M6 guts in a coinmaster package." IMHO, the M6 is pretty bare bones. Awesome machine - has put a lot of gold in my pouch. But... It would be nice having volume control, a backlight and the 'standby' feature (my Propointer and my M6 talk to each other!). Plus, and this is a HUGE PLUS in my book, I can see the 2-tone ferrous-nonferrous option possibly taking the place of my TTF program on the Etrac while being much lighter in the bargain.

I will never 'unload' my M6. She has been too good to me. But I may have to give the MX5 a try to see if it might replace the Etrac!

I also had thought about unloading the M6 for the new kid on the block but my common sense took over. The M6 is an awesome detector in its own right. Yes it doesnt have the features of the MX5 but that doesnt make the MX5 any deeper or better just maybe a little more convenient and fun. I also like my discrimination knob better than the notch system. Its more fine tunable IMHO and simpler to disc. I also like the confidence bars on the M6 that the MX5 doesnt have. Even though the MX5 displays the VDI number with a block under the possible target, I like the way the M6 displays the target icons better along with confidence bar and VDI number. I have really thought hard about my decision and I am happy with it. In the future I paln on getting an MX5 with the finds I find with the M6 but the MX5 will never replace my M6. Hope this helps

Wow! I'm sure glad you brought this up. I didn't know that about the MX5 NOT having the confidence bars! I was literally picking up the phone to order one when I read this. Now I think I'll have to consider it a little more! Thanks for sharing! :please:

Kelly Co brought an MX5 to our club meeting on Wed. My 1st impression is this:
I liked the weight, well balanced. Not sure about the spider coil. I prefer knobs instead
of membrane buttons. It's about time that Whites finally eliminated the big metal
boxes AND it would seem that it would be a bit more weather proofed. Other
than the foregoing I keep my M6.

What about the depth? Would someone be so kind and measure the difference (at least in an air test)?

I'd recommend you look at the youtube offerings on the MX5. I've seen some pretty impressive air tests there.

Thank you. I think I saw all MX5 youtube videos, but I am interested in the difference between MX5 and M6. It is also very difficult to find videos about this detector, bacause there is a stupid car called "MX5" :D. If you know any reliable tests, please share the link. Thanks.

My computer skills are not such that I can insert a link here, but there is a topic labelled "New MX5" over on the Treasurenet forum that has a YouTube video of an MX5 being air tested.

Personally, in my humble opinion, air tests only have relevance when testing the same type coils on the same machine, i. e. Concentric vs. Concentric or DD vs. DD. How different machines/coils deal with ground minerals totally negates any inference of depth provided by air tests.

There's my two cents!

Coming from a Tesoro user, so take that for what it's worth. I have always been interested in the M6. Try to find somebody who has something negative to say about it- dam near impossible. Seems to have a cult following of users who have been extremely successful. I haven't owned a Whites (yet), but build quality on their machines seems top notch from what I have seen. American made, if that matters to anybody.

Then along comes this sweet little MX5 with a perfect price point. My decision suddenly got a lot tougher. Yep there is the tone issue with some, but I am confident Whites will take care of those customers.

I also would be interested in seeing a head to head test of these two detectors! I am sure in the long run there would be no real loser.

Thank you, I didn't saw the second page. The problem is, they are doing the test in "all metal" mode...
