Mx5 noisey threshold

Threshold tone is noisey on my MX5.Static unless Sens is at 4 & threshold is 23 I like to use Sens 8 but will not smooth out Til is so loud you cant hear anything else Tried 3 0ther MX5s Same thing. My Sov. & Safari have smooth threshold with any Sens setting.Sent to Whites Came back same thing.Seems like Sens & threshold are connected som how.Am I doing something wrong? Machine works great with no threshold.tincan

Confused.. you say you tried 3 other MX5s? You have 4 of them? Have you tired them out in the field in different locations? Have you tired them with and without head phones or at least with 2 different pairs of head phones?

I run my MX5 at 8 Sensitivity, Threshold at 21, and Volume at 95, with adjustable volume headphones set to where I like it. I would never run my Sensitivity below 8 unless hit by massive EMI. You might want to adjust Threshold level instead of Sensitivity and then adjust headphones to a a comfortable level.

I don't understand why are you folks running the threshold so high? My typical settings are sensitivity 8, threshold 3-5, 2 or 8 tones depending on where I am hunting, volume 75-85, either no bars discriminated out or in trashy areas just the lowest 3 notched out. You want to set the threshold as low as you can go and still hear it. Even with these settings I have to turn the volume on my White's Pro Star headphones down 3 to 4 clicks from maximum so they don't blow my ears off on shallow large targets. If I crank the threshold up into the twenties, it will be chatty as all get out. With that said, the MX5 and MXT will never have as smooth sounding threshold as the Minelabs. Try dropping the threshold down below 10 and crank the volume up. I believe even the manual states set threshold as low as you can and still hear it.

Good luck,
Matt

Other Mx5s Belong to others. If I turn Threshold low it just sounds like static.Sens. at 3 or 4 and threshold at 23 it smooths out, Sens. at 8 thresh at 40 or 45 it smooths out I dont us headphones with volume control Whites says I shouldnt have to.I like MX5 I ground Balances great in wet beach with sens at full bore with threshold at 0.Ive never Had a Whites MD with a threshold before I figure Im doing something wrong. Will take to dealer this weekend. Thanks for input tincan

I think your issues is the lack of head phones. A threshold should be very faint, to high and you loose the value of having one, not to mention hearing fatigue

First and foremost, a smooth Thold is essential if you want to hear the small and the deep. Depending on the ground your on, you may have to lower the Sensitivity till you get a steady smooth hum. By running a smooth Thold you will get more finds than trying to "horse" the machine. You cannot "make" the machine work for you, you must work with the machine.

In ground that I hunt, I have never been able to run my Thold higher than 4 1/2 - even tho it has a Thold setting of up to 10. My White's GMT has an initial setting (marked with a diamond) of 7 1/2 - I have never been able to run it at the "initial" 7 1/2 setting. It's just one of those realities of life.

You will find more with a smooth Thold than with a noisy Thold.

I know, that's a hard one to chew on!

I use headphones,no volume control.Whites says they should work.I been digging holes 35+years Im 78 with a bad back I hunt the beach & foot deep water.M6 did it for me but I need something lighter Sov with box around neck works but Iget tang led in wires.Same with PI MD Mx5 works with no thold But this makes no sense to me.tincan

I have to run my t'hold in the 20s for a good steady hum, sens at 8 with volume max'd on my machine and adjust my headphones.

The MX5 does not have a smooth threshold, it is raspy and full of static sound, you will never get it smooth. Why bother? I have several White's machines that use a threshold in the motion Disc. mode like the 5900 Di Pro SL and 6000 Pro XL and they are as smooth as any Minelab, the MX5 just ain't smooth and that is just the nature of this beast.

I agree! don't fuss over the threshold, Its just not as smooth as other machines. If it gets really nasty sounding that means lower your sens. I find that I need to adjust it as my sense. needs to be adjusted. makes sense if you think about it. I run it so that I can barely hear it. Its never going to sound smooth, but as long as its there and you can hear it, its doing its job. I find if it gets real annoying its because I hit a spot that I need to lower my sens. It seems the two work in conjunction which I find is a good thing. Also I was given some great advice from this forum when I first got my MX5 to get the best sound performance. Turn the volume on your machine up to maxi..99.. then use the volume control on your headphones to adjust to your comfort level.

treasurechic - you nailed it! Good for you! I use that same technique at times, when in difficult ground. Makes for shorter battery life but, also, makes for smooth Thold. When hunting nuggets it is very important to have that steady smooth mosquito hum. Tiny and deep will whisper to you.

Thanks to all By changing to volume control phones I got it fixed so it will run with thold.Turned vol to 85 thold to 25. To get phone cord out the back run cord under strap I put arm over strap because I change arms so much. Also I use 9" spider coil from MX5 on my M6 Its 1/4 lb lighter and that makes a difference on the end of the stick Thanks again tincan

You will find there are some very helpful people on this Forum. Glad all that advice helped you. I find alot of people including myself until recently don't ask enough questions and sell or trade their machine before getting to know it. I'm keeping my MX5 its an excellent detector.
