MX Sport may have an edge in mineralization,

Old California

New member
Yesterday, a local detectorist and I detected several areas. First stop was our local dry river bed, he was using an AT Pro, I was using the MX Sport.

Both are fine detectors, I've owned the AT Pro before so I know it strenghts it's a good detector. We were comparing signals, one particular signal his unit could not detect the signal. He was wide open, no discrimination, which is needed for the black sand.

What was happening, the masking was not allowing his detector to see the target. So I bent down scooping a few handful of sand running across my MX Sport coil, third of forth scoop a tiny earring surfaces. Then, I ran the earring across his coil and it did detect the earring.

Apparently, The MX Sport can detect to some degree in mineralization. We have terrible black sand, VLF struggle with depth and sensitivity. Only a few VLF operate decent, the MX Sport will operate under these tough conditions.

It was an eye opener for the local detectorist, don't get me wrong the AT Pro is an extremely good detector, and the AT Gold would have been the better detector for these type of conditions.

Later in the evening, hit a tot lot and the MX Sport detected a small 14k earring stud.

MX Sport is going to be a winner, I know others may feel different but I'm seeing Incredible results with my MXS.

Thanks for looking,
Paul

Nice find. It is a diamond? That's great to hear because I have an updated MX Sport coming and the 6x10 coil. What settings were you using and which coil?

Rick

Hello Rick,

I'm not sure if the diamond is real, probably not.

I'm using the elliptical coil for jewerly hunting, both inland and fresh water dry river bed.

The earring was located in a dry river bed with black sand, Was using both Prospecting and All Metal mode switching back and forth between the two modes. A SAT setting between 3-4 depending on mineralization. Use just enough SAT to handle black sand mineralization, VCO on position.....These settings are for tough sand, use a different set of settings for inland jewerly hunting.

The 14k earring stud was from a tot lot, been using Relic mode with neat settings for a modified jewerly setup that works for me.

Select Relic mode, bump up SAT to 8. Select 4-tone, Discriminate all iron, then set REJ VOL between 20 or 30. What REJ VOL does is help me separate the iron tone from the lowest of 4-tones. The iron tone is suppressed, lower than normal. For those who prefer to hear iron, this is a neat setup allowing the user to tell the difference between iron and the lowest conductive tone. Otherwise, Without this feature it is next to impossible to tell the two tones apart.

Getting back to SAT, With Relic mode prefer maximum SAT 8 because it auctally shortens the tone, much more snappier and helps me in tight situations especially in trashy areas, areas with iron or detecting near Metal poles. Plus, No loss of depth bumping up SAT with Relic mode.

What's really neat about Relic mode, it's basically a hot mode one can modifly to use for just about all inland hunting. Coin, jewerly, Relic it's endless. Plus, the user has the opition of using SAT to enhance the mode even more.

Still so much to learn, enjoying the MX Sport so much it's capabilities are endless.

Yes, I know the MX Sport got off to bumpy start. I'm not going to let this keep me from enjoying the MXS, it's too good of a detector to not use.

Take care,
Paul

Paul,

This is looking like it is going to be one of those machines that isn't going to get a lot of attention from people, maybe due to the rough intro they had with it. That is fine by me though. I'm sure it is by you too. Those of us that do hunt sites with a lot of mineral in it, really appreciate the machines that can do a good job; they are far and few between. Using anything short of a pulse machine has shown less than stellar results over the years for me. The Sport comes along and I buy one by chance just to give it a go.

I quickly found out how well it actually does in bad ground as far as giving a good signal and ID on targets. Most machines will either not give a signal at all, or will report the object as iron. The depth it does this at, varies from machine to machine. Most hit the wall at approx 5-6 inches where things begin to turn into iron signals. I walked it through my test garden and was getting good signals and IDs on targets that were in the 8-9 inch range for coin size objects. In hunting some of my sites locally, I saw this happening in the field too. It has opened up a new 3-4 inch layer of ground for me in which I can sort of cherry pick signals out of. In most of my sites I can run the GPX and do a pretty good job with it. Some sites though, like around the old homesites and mills, etc...there are just too many targets and too much iron for the GPX to do its thing. Now I have the Sport, that can handle the ground pretty good AND is no slouch in iron or trash either. I have yet to go on a hunt with it where I didn't come back smiling with something (or things) in my pouch. And I don't mean copper BB bird shot either. LOL

So true Daniel,

The MX Sport got off to a rockly start, but those that see the advantages the MXS has to offer will benefit from this new detector.

You and I have similar ground, So we appreciate a good VLF having the capabilities of seeing through harsh mineralization. Of course not Pi depth by any means but an edge over other fast processing detectors in poor soil, and the MX Sport is great on low conductive very sensitive including buttons, it's going to be hot on buttons.

Thanks for sharing your experiences Daniel, we're the black sheep but like you said that's ok
