MX Sport and the Ultimate coil thoughts

Bill_S

Well-known member
I had to send my MX Sport in because of problems. Whites sent me a new one that seems to be working correctly. I bought the 7" and the 13" coils for it from John at JMTMetaldetectors who is a sponsor on here. I took the coils out for a short bit today and I have to say I am impressed with them. I was digging some 9-10 range targets with the 13" coil. I did not find any deep coins but found some old shell casings. I was finding small 22 type casing to about 7 inches. I would definitely recommend it. The 13" does seem to add some depth over the stock coil. In my test garden it hit on all my targets even the deeper ones that are close to 10 inches. The small coil seemed to have good depth for its size. Both coils seem to have the same ID numbers on coins as the stock coil. I will try to get out and make a video tomorrow.

thanks for sharing Bill,

Sounds like you're off with a great start with the new MXS, and good job getting good depth with the 13" coil. You'll like the 7" coil as well, it too is a go-getter on depth for it's size.

Recently, I too sent in my MXS for the current upgrade. This is my 3rd upgrade making it my 4th MXS with different firmware. Just got it back today, They sent me a new detector, wow wasn't expecting a new model.

Modulation works, but i perfer modulation off but those wanting modulation this current upgrade has it. Was testing at a park test bed, it's still deep and Prospecting mode is even deeper. That's important for my type of hunting, prospecting mode has an edge under harsh soil conditions especially out relic hunting farm land or up in gold country.

Congratulations with the MXS with the two additional coils!

Old cal ! Im starting to learn and like my sport! I've got all coils for it , lve been using tha13 inch in water for more depth because I am not ready for all metal yet, but want more depth with tones and discrim its deep a few times I thought I was chasing the target around but it was small and very deep lve had to dig strait down two or more scoops to reach these targets , and its weight is great , l may leave the 13 on most times or use the 7 inch in rivers near shore or trashy parks . hey! ! Bought my MX after September how do I know if it needs a up date ? Some guys send them in three times looks like , I guess mine runs right? It does squeak a lot ! Waterhound

I heard any MX Sport released after Sept 8, 2017 has the update including newer faceplate, just call Whites to confirm with the serial number.

Or, in Relic mode compare modulation off and on. You'll notice a slight depth loss in audio with modulation on. Turn it off audio springs back louder on the deeper signals, bury a penny at 6" to 7" inches to test modulation. If you're not hearing differences, call Whites you may have an earlier version.

With the 13" coil, that may be to big for water hunting. In my western area, mineralizition effects the signal especially in fresh water. Too big a coil creates masking, black sand is too harsh. So we use smaller coils when detecting in water, plus much easier to swing less drag with smaller coils and you can increase sensitivity to regain some depth loss if the black sand allows.

Good luck, keep up posted i feel you're going to like the mxsport.

Paul thanks for your response back! Are ground in northern mi is yellow sand then clay and some rocks in lakes and rivers , when l try the MX in all metal sat 2 or 3 and sensitivity at 5 with iron grunt besides the iron grunt theirs a low iron type sound a lot , not the threshold , is that black sand making that low iron sound ? And maybe I'll try the stock coil for a while again in water.

Yes, That's probably the black sand you're hearing.

With conditions like these, ill increase SAT even if it means loosing depth but will gain some depth back with smoother stability. Smaller coils help, they have a smaller footprint which help due the black sand masking.

Plus, We have it so bad good targets ID as iron. So we dig it all regardless the ID, ive dug shallow quarters ID'ing as iron. This is in fresh water rivers and lakes, both dry sand or in water. Black sand is terrible, so it's best to dig all signals especially smaller gold jewelry will most likely ID as iron even near the surface.

It's ok to bump up SAT with prospecting mode under these conditions, discrimination mode suffer regardless the brand which is why i prefer prospecting mode for these conditions.

OK I will definitely be trying that out also in prospect mode that lve never tried yet! Yesterday I learned because of even discriming out pennies in coin and jewelry I was missing something aluminum targets , well now I know about black sand noise , is their really a time for the sport to be cranked up all the way ? In the middle of a trashless field or something! It looks like a lot of people use no discrim modes with this detector .and slow way down , take their time and really hunt for any good targets! I guess l got so used to cherry picking and covering masses of bottom quickly with my AT that s why l got so discourage at first with the sport , no wonder my minelab friend says now your hunting when he sees me using the MX _I'm learning to use this machine how its designed to be old water hounds can still be trained .
