Must I choose between gold or coins and relics?

Papalalo

New member
I just decided to try this hobby and have a real problem with selection. Here in Chile S.A. there are gold mines most everywhere and the beaches and parks likewise are plenty full. Can I get an md that will suit me for everything or do I need two md's? Also, there's ton's of older md's on e-bay at what seems to be reasonable prices, any ideas? Thanks in advance, Lalo (Ed)

Sounds like the Scorpion Gold Stinger is right up your alley-from all the numerous posts I've read. I think John Edmonton will probably agree-he has one and it's really a gold machine, coin hunter all in one. Has several modes to choose from for these purposes. When I read your post, it jumped into my mind immediately.

Im new as well so icant answe your question BUT
i DO envy the problem you have ... GOLD ? or Good
stuff on the beach? :nopity:

However i do wish you good hunting,, youll enjoy
the hobby and the folks on this forum are all
really helpfull

Ron

The Gold Stinger would be a good choice as would the Whites MXT.
I bet you will do quite well where you live. I don't think there are
that many people out there MDing, but I could be mistaken., certainly
not as many as here in North America. I am curious if SA has any
metal detecting clubs?

If your doing it all then the GTI 2500 will be great. I have found nuggets with mine and everything else like jewelry on the beach, civil war relics, coins, etc....

Good luck

Alan

Saludos Lalo,

Well, buying in Ebay can be risky, as many have found on many forums There is no detector that does it all. If you are new to detecting, start with the ACE 250. Get at least one extra coil, maybe two. It is hot on gold, likes meteorites, coins etc. I would suggest you hunt beaches for coins first, to get you orientated to the hobby, machine-etc. Then, if you want to specialize in gold hunting, you can consider the Garrett Infinium or Sea Hunter Mark II. These last two are specialized detectors, and should never be purchased as a first time user due to their many complexities.

Buying new gets you a warranty. Buying used does not. Buying a major brand like Garrett gets you to forums with lots of experienced users, where you can get good advice. Buying cheap machines pretty well leaves you isolated.

Manaba thanks for the translation, I thought I would have to break out the old spanish to english dictionary.

Lalo I would tend to listen to your SA neighbor. I don't have any time on the Garretts, but my next machine will be a Garrett. If you want a true multi function machine and after looking at the Garretts you may want to consider the Minelab X-terra 705 also. I am thinking of one of the Master Hunters or an Infinium or a Gold Stinger for my next machine.

My problem with some of the Minelabs is many of them are now made in a Muslim nation. In that country there have been terorists atacks on "western" tourists. Being a Christian man I have moral issues with this.

Before the flack starts to fly, Yes I drive a car powered by gasoline, derived from oil and much of that comes from muslim nations. I know.

I have a Xterra 705 and a Garrett propointer. My machine was built in Ireland or I would not have bought it.

You may also wish to look into the Tesoro Lobo ST

When I was in Sydney a few weeks back, I talked to the manager of the Miners Den about this article. the Miners Den shops used to be owned by Minelab, but through a company restructure, due to the obvious clash of interest that it would infer, it is now a separate entity, although still owned by the same parent company that owns Minelad. Coden.I think that only the Sydney and Melbourne shops are still under Coden ownership, North Queensland is independent.
Anyway, I only mentioned that to give clarity to my source. What I found out through our conversation, was that only the circuit boards were being made in Malaysia. the rest will still be built where they are. The newspaper article in typical news reporter sensationalistic sloppiness, is wrong yet again,.

I thought of the Ace-I just didn't know about the gold part. I was afraid of being partisan!:heh:

The 2 best detectors on the market at the moment that have a visual display, are the X-Terra 705 ans the Whites MXT.
There's been a few hints that Garrett is close to releasing a new model of detector. While no details have been leaked out as to whether or not it's going to be a coin hunting machine or a gold hunting machine, all we can do is wait till Garrett's are ready to let the cat out of the bag. The usually drop some very blunt hints when the time is close, so we'll have no doubt when it's release is real close. It may well happen in this coming Northern hemisphere's spring.

There are detectors for coins and such and detectors specifically for gold or nuggetshooting. No one detector serves both purposes well. Don't get into the real old detecors on Ebay as technology has improved over the years. The Garrett Scorpion is one exception to the rules as it can be used for coinshooting and nuggetshooting. The 2500 with all metal and automatic and manual ground balance can also be used fairly successful for both. To successfully nuggetshoot, especially for the small nuggies, one needs a machine with a higher operating frequency, true all metal, and manual ground balance. Even the lowly Ace 250 will find nuggets if they are big enough and the ground isn't highly mineralized which is generally the case in gold country. You need to figure out wwhich type of hunting you will be doing the most and go from there.

WOW!!!!!!!!!
I had only hoped to pick up a bit of helpful information but am thrilled to have received much more! Great info from each and every one of you. Very nice to know there's a choice to be had at beginners prices. I'm only 45 minutes from the beach so will learn the basics there. Then will hit the abandoned gold mine on the hill behind our home. I can only hope to catch the bug big time with a nice find or two. Thanks to you all and a big hello to my neighbor to the north, Manaba. Perhaps when my feet are really wet in this hobby we can meet for a treasure hunt. Realmente, muchos gracias por el information amigo!

Thanks Bill! Initially I hope to keep my cost under $500.00 but then can decide which I prefer for a second machine. The ACE 250 can be had new plus shipping for under $300.00 as well as a used Master Hunter CX on e-bay. Is it cold in PDX right now?

Actually it's about 50 degrees here today. Tropical weather compared to what we have been having. If the MH on Ebay is any good it might be your best shot for both kinds of hunting but one has to be careful when purchasing unknowns from unknowns on Ebay. Have you checked with Garrett to see if they have any used ones or demonstrators from their showroom? Contact Melinda Harper at Melinda.Harper@garrett.com and ask her. You might be able to pick up a deal. Tell her I sent you.

I sincerely hope they come up with a newer and better detector, and that they consider my two suggestions for the new model (yup, I dared to give them some advise, just hope they take it): the ability to switch priorities betwen small (coin sized) targets and big ones (veins, caches, boxes, etc), plus the capacity to pinpoint single targets when there are many underground (without having to switch coils).

Papalalo, Given your price range, the best dual purpose machine for prospecting and coins is the Garrett Scorpion Gold Stinger.
It is a tried and true machine. In the wet sand of the ocean salt on the heavy mineralized beaches you have, will be the only problem. Just remember to turn down the sensitivity, it's like having the high beam headlights on in the fog when you drive your car, the low beams are more effective.
