Musky and hot rocks

Picked up a used Advantage awhile ago and took it to an area with lots of hot rocks.I ground balanced the way Digger said in his article.I set the ground balance to slightly positive as coil lowers to ground;makes a slight noise. Then I back off sensitivity to where it barely chirps.Dug up a fair ammount of baseball size hot rocks.I cant tell the difference between a good target and hot rocks.Should this be recognizable? Now what I learned is to back off the ground balance counter clockwise a little. For my area I had it set at about 2:30.Then when I backed it off I was at 1:00 and most of my hot rocks I was finding didnt register anymore. My question is;am I losing depth by setting the ground balance to where it is negative to the ground? Is there a better way to eliminate hot rocks or to tell the difference. Thanks for help, Steve

But. .

When pin-pointing, or switching to all-metal, don't hot rocks sound really loud like a can, or doesn't the target response actually sound when going away from the center.

I am pretty sure there is a 'tell-tell' sign for hot rocks, but I don't have them here.
