Musketeer Colt Questions

Hi folks, wasn't sure where to post this as I see there is no Musketeer section on the forum. I just got a new in the box Minelab Musketeer Colt. I have been detecting for many years swinging mainly Tesoro detectors, I normally like tot lot type hunting for jewelry & clad but thought that I would let the tot lots refill and try for a few older deeper coins, that's why I got the Colt. I am having good luck with the Colt, digging coins from the same places I have hunted many times. The Colt is deeper than the Tesoro's I have owned but think it isn't running at its full potential. Here is where I need you folks help - most every Tesoro I have ever had (there's been alot of them) chirped when the sensitivity is turned to max which tells me that they are putting out full power. When I turn my Colt sensitivity to max it is completely quiet, not a chirp. Maybe they are suppose to be like this I don't know as Minelab is new to me. Another thing I am thinking is the Colt's ground balance is set alittle too positive for my ground, because when in all metal mode if I drop the coil towards the ground I get a pretty good beep. I know with the Tesoro's there is internal pots. to adjust the ground balance, etc. I have read that on the lower end Minelabs such as the Colt the pots. are labeled, I haven't opened up the control box as I don't want to screw anything up or void my warranty. I see two screws on the control box - one on each side of the coil connector jack. I was wondering if I took out the screws if the control panel would come out of the housing so I could find the pots. Do you think that I would get alittle better performance/depth if I figured out how to get the sens. so it chirps at full sens. and get the ground balance set for my area. Like I mentioned the Colt is working very well and am really happy with it but would like it at is full potential. Thanks all. Steve.

Hey Steve,

A nice find to snag a brand new machine that's over 12 years old!

Did it come with an 8" coil? If so that's probably why it's so stable and doesn't appear to chatter?
The larger 10" coils can make them (the Musketeer XS XS Pro Advantage) chatter ever so slightly...but that depends on any interference issue that might be in the air waves local to you!

The Colt has a preset Ground Balance tolerance.
On the other Musk models they have a Ground Adjust control which is variable. However, I've searched countless times with Musks and never had to ground balance!

My suggestion would be to not open it and let it do its thing as you say it is finding coins even [deeper] than your previous model!

Good point Des D. I am not going to touch it. Wow 12 years old, I never know that, I knew that the Musketeers were no longer being produced but didn't know it has been that long. Guess I got lucky to find one, as I said it is was new in the box with warranty card, etc. I don't know if Minelab will honor the warranty but I did send in the card. It is alot of fun to use. Thanks again Des D. Steve.

Steve,I had a Colt and did an Air test comparison with an Advantage. The Colt was not as sensitive as the Advantage even though I would still consider it a deep coin detector.I would conclude its tuned to make it more stable.Same control box of the older Sovereigns two screws by the coil connector plug is all you remove. The front of the control box with a slight wiggle and pull should pull right out.You may have to pull the battery wire from the clip to have full access.I'm no expert on this unit but there may be a pot for sensitivity.Anyway I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, I have all the needed info if I ever decide to do anything to my Colt. A great detector indeed. Steve.
