musketeer advantage help...

Went out with the guys tonight and hunted.. Found 2 quarters and 4 pennies.. like 50 or 60 pull tabs and pop tops  I tried everything and this thing wont stop hitting hard on pop tops... tried discrimination all the way up and sensitivity down even, this thing still hits harder with better tone on pop tops than on pennies.. how do I know the difference? I burried some and tried to tell but can't.... Why does this thing sound like I am on a quarter when I am on a pop top or pull tab? I wasted tons of time and energy tonight because of this.... Help please...

Pull tabs digging will lead you to the good stuff..Eliminate and you'll lose items in the nickel range. The necessary evil of metal detecting .
You'll have to endure it like the rest of us.
I save mine and donate them to " Wheelchairs for Kids "

Joel, while it is true that small to mid-size gold falls into the aluminum range, I don't think you have answered his question. There might, in fact, be locations, where someone isn't going to be a hero, and may just go for coins (deep silver, etc...). There are turf environments where I and others (gasp) pass surface tabs and foil. There are simply some environments where .... to dig 200 pieces of can slaw and tab slaw, is just not an option. If gold jewelry is a person's goal, then they'd be better served by just going to places where gold jewelry has a better ratio. Namely, swimming beaches, or turf next to swimming pools, etc....

So to answer throw-down's question: There is no reason why the Advantage's disc. control can't be advanced enough clockwise, to ultimately knock out aluminum (foil, then round tabs, then square tabs, etc....) while still keeping pennies, dimes, quarters IN. Something is wrong with the way you are detecting, or something is wrong with your disc. control, or you must have a type "pop top" or pulltab that is large enough to come into the penny/dime range. Can you post a pix of the type debri you say can not be knocked out, even at the highest settings? I have used the Advantage, with success, in pulltab riddled zones before without a problem. Was able to knock out low to mid-level conductors, and effortlessly pick out wheaties and such.

Try round tabs in an air test, while slowly advancing the disc. control. You will see the point on the dial where they start to "break up".

K will do... Thanks for the help Tom..

joel.. I do not care about rings.. Just coin at the moment.. But you can continue to have fun :goodnight:

i have never tried a musketeer. i take it that there are no high/low sounds on this machine? for me that is the best way to discriminate without removing a lot of targets. quarters, dimes, should sound very dif erent from pop tops. but like i said iv"e never tried a musketeer. good luck to u.

Does this detector have a blanker? Most pop tops and pull tabs are light and close to the surface. A good blanker will eliminate the first 2 or 4 inches. My Big Bud 220-D will do either. Or, and this is hard, tighten up your belt, and in these high trash areas and DON'T dig the BIG signals. Your choice, spend an hour digging up boggies and maybe a penny or two, or spend the hour digging up deeper targets and missing a few shallow coins and the boggies. The "gotta dig up all targets" attitude is fine if you have the time and inclination. What ever floats your boat!:wiggle::wiggle::wiggle:

Tom in CA make lots of sense what you described .
I'm not familiar with the advantage .
I use whites extensively and dig every thing that makes a good VDI.
The problem I have is I detect lots of soccer fields and ball parks where the bottom dirt was brought in from somewhere else fill with trash.
I can usually differentiate the big pieces of buried junk from the clad and other goodies.
I usually dig ever thing as long as it makes sense.
At the sand and beaches I'll dig so next time I detect it it won't be there to bother me.
