Mr. Mayor, question concerning cache hunting................

Have you ever done any cache hunting? If so, if an old house has a stone fence around it, would this be a good place to locate a possible cache, and if so, is there any rule of thumb where the cache might be hidden...like in corners? What coil would you recommend for an Bandido II uMax? Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

If a man is going to bury a cache...he is going to think about several things. Number one it is going to be close enough to his house so he can look out that bedroom window and see it. It's going to be close enough to the house so he will wake up if someone is trying to steal it or he will have an alarm on it. The most common site I have seen caches found is around or in the fireplace....or in or near the chicken yard. It is not going to be far from that bedroom window though. If you know where the house is..first search the area around the fireplace. I assume the house is no longer standing. If it is there are more things you need to know. Once you have searched that fireplace area well..then start along that stone fence to a point that you would think is as far as they would put an outhouse. That ain't far as you don't want that outhouse too far away in case of emergencies.
If you can figure out where the chicken yard was..everybody had one..then you can search that area. If I had a nice stone fence that would probably be the back wall of my chicken yard.
Those are just things to think about. I would use the 10 inch concentric coil. Good luck in your search...

appears to be a one room house with the fireplace on the North side. It is surrounded with a stone fence on the back and both sides, the front faces a bluff with a creek at the base of it. I have found a Civil War belt plate, rimfire cartridges, buttons, fork & knives...but no coins at the site. I can not locate the trash dump either. This site is located on a ranch, and you can not gain access from a road, you must either hike or ride horseback to get to the area.
I suspect that this was a permanent dwelling, too much activity for a line camp. A short distance to the North, across the creek on another bluff, maybe a half mile is another rock structure. This structure is smaller, and there is no rock fence. I have found rimfire cartridges and other misc. items at that site. Again, I can not find a trash dump. These are the only structures in the area, nothing else within miles.
Thank you for your information on where to look for a cache. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

Are you finding any glass there at all? What color is it? The stream is where they got their water. Could it be something other than a house. You should be finding lots of iron and typical things lost around a house if it was. Are you sure it is not just a stopover place?.
There are coins there if it saw any habitation at all. You may just be getting the trash out of the way to get to the coins. Don't give up.
There also has to be a trash dump there. Did they typically use outhouses in that area? Lots of time the outhouse became the repository for the trash. Watch for shallow depressions and then try them with a 6' probe. Once you find one you will find others in a line from it. Good luck with your site...

Yes, I am also finding the normal iron and other trash that would be around a normal dwelling. I have also found pieces of purple color glass and etc. I can not find the trash dump nor the outhouse. Off to the side, behind the house is a gulley that has a rock fence in front of it, appears to be where horses were kept.
It is possible that some trees are now growing where the outhouse or trash dump was located. I am confident that this is a virgin site. I first found it a few years ago while looking for a lost calf. I was on a horse at the time because we could not get a four wheel drive vehicle into the area. This is a remote area.
I have ordered a 5.75 inch coil from Scully, and I will try to get around the trees at the site. I have a 4 inch coil, but must confess that I do not have much confidence in it for depth of detection.
Sometime in the next few weeks, I plan on going back to the site and will take some pictures...I just do not want to take up space with what may be a boring endeavor to some of the folks on this forum. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

Check for outhouse pits as people dumped garbage in those and lost coins in them. On the rock fence check for loose stones that could be hiding a cache. Better still, detect the fence if the rocks aren't hot.
In the house check unde the floor, behind baseboards if any exist, in the walls, in the attic if one exists or up high in the rafters.
If ther was a cellar hole outside check thet. If an old cistern exists check inside but don't fall in. If there are any trees close to the house check any big knotholes not too far off the ground and forks in the tree with a deep depression in the crotch. If there are any wooden fence posts check all of them for a posthole bank.

Could it have been a stage stop or pony express relay station.? Was ther anything to mine in the area way back then or trap. Could be an old trappers or miners shack. Due the the abscence of coins and other common items they may not have had any to lose. Most of those folks didn't have much money and bartered for everything.
