Once upon a time, I was a young Specialist E-5 who went to work, full time, for the Arkansas Army National Guard, fresh out of the US Navy. I was a supply sergeant to an aviation company at Camp Robinson, here in central Arkansas. Now the main man in charge was an old crusty crotchety sergeant-major Regular Army Adviser by the name of Henry Potts. This man was a friend of Daddy's somehow and was the reason I got in the Guard in the first place. He was as hard-boiled and starchy as they came. He put the fear of GOD in all of us and the worst that could happen was to incur his wrath.

The Sergeant-Major got to the office, every morning rain or shine, at 0500 hours. (That

That I encountered when I served in the Marines. While taking a short cut and walking on the grass by the Battalion quonset hut one evening, I heard someone yell for me to get off the frigging grass. I looked around and did not see anyone, so I yelled "pizz off, I will walk where I want to walk." Unfortunately, it was the 1st Sgt. and he was yelling out the window of the quonset hut. Because of my mouth, I paid dearly.

I enjoyed your story and appreciate you posting it...it did bring back some memories. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

was a grumpy old fart anyway, can't imagine what it was like being under his command! Guess it made you a better person, huh? Or at least a good coffee maker! Great story Johnboy!

kinda reminds me of a morning not too far past. There's a group that meet for coffee a 06:00 Monday's at the Church. Seems the pastor had been given a gift of 5 pounds of hazelnut coffee and since he brought the coffee, that's what he used. Well, I'm not one to complain, but I really don't like flavored coffee, so I asked if I provided some regular stuff could we maybe have some plain coffee. Sure he says, so I bring some in. The next monday rolls around and he announces to me that we are having "un"flavored coffee today. I said that's great and proceded to pour myself a cup of HOT WATER! Guess you could say that it was sure unflavored! Really enjoyed your story John!
