Mr. Bill & I are gonna test a few detectors today......

after work @ one of my local "hunted out" Colonial sites. Last time there with the T2, I only scraped up one musketball......
Anything left is deep & on the fringes of ID'ing correctly, or masked. Units we should be experimenting with include F75's, my T2, my 1270 w. 10.5" coil, (& whatever else Mr. Bill brings).....
The plan is to mark some "iffy" or weak targets with little flags. Then grab other detectors to see which one "sees" it best (if at all). We may not find much per say, but it's always fun to do stuff like this.....(I'll try to post tommorrow if anything interesting comes out of this).
Plus, we had heavy rain overnight so the soil should be pretty conductive too.....but wetness makes iron alot more conductive too I have found.

My friend Bill Ladd did indeed invite me to a special place to do a little detecting with him. It was a good time that I really enjoyed, did get a tad bit chilly when the sun went behind the clouds. We were in sight of the ocean.

I had taken my F75 with me for this hunt. I had it set up quite wild. Running in discrimination mode with (0) zero discrimination most of the time, sometimes I moved it to #10. I used 2f audio. I changed back & forth between PF mode & DE mode. I ran the sensitivity between 90 to 99. Not quite a recommended setting for starting out with this unit, but one needed to make it hunt deep without masking problems. The field was loaded with iron. One had to be very careful ground balancing.

Running down one side of the field were high power ele. lines. Not to far away was a military base, and we were along side of a multi-lane highway.

Bill, and I were talking, and we realized that we don

on us which really hindered what we set out to accomplish. We had hoped to test more units, and have more time but the wind began whipping & it was very cold. We had the right idea though...those little orange flags you can get at any hardware store worked well. I marked some "iffy" or jumpy signals. Many showed iron from 1 direction, but positive numbers from another. Mr. Bill had the F75 running hot on disc mode...I countered with the T2 on all metal. Extra hot on sensitivity 94 :O Yes, there was some background chatter, but guess what? The site is hammered to death and running "normal" you will find nothing. So, I just turned the threshold a little negative to minimize the sound. Once I got like 3 or 4 flags out, I put the T2 down, called Bill over & grabbed the 1270. The 1270 with a big coil is a real beast compared to the F75, & well there is no comparison balance-wise;) Even with the 1270 having a big coil, all metal, & sensitivity on 8, it did read all the flagged spots, but just kinda nipped a couple. Though the cold & wind stopped us from getting too detailed in testing, what I did notice was.....
The F75 on disc mode was matching the T2 in all metal mode. I liked that, as stepping up from a T2 I can run the F75 on disc mode with no worries of losing depth....
Hot Rocks- As Bill mentioned, we have some nasty black magnitite (sp?) stones here that have been a major problem for Fishers like the 1270 & Coin$trike. They are rocks with iron inside. The one the F75 "found" was a fairly big one, & we noticed it came in as a #16....Every other one & all the small ones are under 15 (as they should be classified as "iron"). So, I'd say the F75 handles hot rocks very well. I've only seen one other big shallow one read as 16 too. Therefore, I don't think it's something to worry about at all. Maybe if we got into a field full of large or shallow ones showing 16, bump the disc up to 16 from 15?. Again I've only seen it just twice with heavy iron-loaded black rocks, really no different than a large pirce of shallow iron fooling the ID.....
We'll have to try it again soon & with even more units.

that I turned up the discrimination, and it cancelled out the affect of the rocks. It was just too early this morning when I posted. :)
