Moving to better area to metal detect .:happy:

I no longer metal detect as my area and sites are worked out and are loaded with foil , iron and chewed up pop cans. I am thinking of moving away to better area, otherwise i am quitting the hobby and selling detector:confused:
Good luck to the others who post on here who find rings and silver coins because all i keep finding locally is foil , iron and pull tabs:cry:.

After 8 years of hunting with a buddy and covering about 100 miles circle from our home he just burnt out and I hunt alone..Problem is even in the next town or county they have their share of metal detectorists and have done they same to their areas. Personally if I had my choice would move to a saltwater beach area where swimmers abound and the area is constantly being reseeded with jewelry...If you go in the water an Excalibur would do the job and if you only hunted the beaches a Sov. would be my choice mainly because its hipmountable and leave freedom to carry a shovel and lightens the load. An Explorer is used by many in these situations also and also excells but would shorten my hunting time as walking in the sand is tough enough as it is...Heck my wife wouldn't move but I can dream can't I as visit the beach hunters forum and see the nice finds..and again can't work these areas out as they are reseeded every day of the swim season and it even extends to the winter season as salt sand never freezes and the sand moves out leaving the deepies to be found that summer hunters couldn't touch as detectors even a Minelab only goes so deep..

Cappy,
Where are you from?

Try doing a lil Historic research of the town that your from...

Find out where the Carnivals,Fairs, Comm Gatherings were.. When everyone gets together to watch the Fireworks on July 4, etc....

Hit The Parks

Hey I always thought that for some reason the Ball fields were off limits dont ask me why but I just did...
I went to one yesterday and found my First silver ring with my SE.. and alot more clad than usual.....

Pick up and take a drive somewhere or a ride on Bicycle....

When you fell of that Bicycle when you were a kid did you get back on it?

I can't imagine a place that would totally shut you down. In fact, I believe the phrase, "Cash is in the trash!". To find things, you have to go where people (donors) have been. That means digging some trash items in order find treasure.

On the bright side, the Explorer is one of the best detectors made for finding things in trash. Perhaps a smaller coil could help you separate "the good from the bad". It might also help to prepare a good test garden so you can listen to good targets and train your ear to pick out the good stuff. Bench testing might also help.

Finally, make sure negative ideas have not seeped into your thinking in a way that it makes you think you cannot find anything. If this was football and I was your coach I probably would be telling you something like, "Back to the basics - this is a football." What I mean by that is that when your number of finds go through a drought, it tends to cause you to abandon proper technique, like your swing speed for instance. Willingness to knock on someones door to get permission will help you get to a good location to hunt. So you have to get past that hurdle, and that has nothing to do with your detector at all. So examine your attitude when you go out to give yourself the best opportunity to find things.

I have to understand that you may just have lost some interest in the hobby and there is nothing wrong with that, but if you still want to find treasure make sure to check your technique including your confidence about finding things. Most of the things we are trying to find is still out there. We just have to be there in that location with our detector and attitude in place. It is a game of numbers. The more times you try, the more treasure you will find.

I hope you find contentment which ever way you go.

Alton

live by a beach...preferably FLORIDA...and work it every morning! I guess I can dream too...right? I am stuck here hunting the same places I have the last 25 years and hoping to maybe pop out a deep silver coin once in a blue moon.

Ok thanks for your advice , here are some of my thoughts on the subject.
Well first i have to say that i pretty happy with the explorer SE . i have been using SE for the last few months its hard to knock such a high performing detector and to be fair to it i have found about 70 coins but all of no value so far. I used to use an explorer 2 and did OK with it , i regret selling exp2 . No silver has been found as yet with SE this is something i like finding but so far -zippo.
Local history has been looked into but reveals nothing of interest worth trying. Small coils i do have but still have found me no good targets. Lack of interest you say , well maybe thats true , maybe i am pissed off with it all , but then you could put that down to me finding mostly rubbish iron and pop tins :(.
My geographical area has been mined heavily over the last 150+ years so alot of ground has been disturbed of top soil finds that otherwise would probably have been found. Even some sport field ball fields have been tried with no success. Some farmers fields i have tried have also turned up nothing!. Bits of non ferrous crap only on farm fields.
Having sat down and thought about it i think moving to a better area is my best bet. Maybe buy a tent or a camper van and live in the country.
When i go into the deep country to live i will give it a few months and if i have still found zippo i will be selling up and leaving the hobby for something else that i can get more success in. A male porn star maybe:laugh:
I am only detecting a few hours a week so i guess i don't put enough time in , lack of patience could be the cause but then when you are finding zippo this is to be expected!. I might later move to a beach and live close to beach to find modern coins as a last ditch attempt to find things. Sorry for whinging but lack of finds is getting me down. Makes me feel like selling up and start sky diving maybe:wiggle:
I hope my se is not a duffy , i have just had a new coil fitted as the one that came with the se was duff and i have had a new one fitted. Happy hunting and good luck to others..

A Couple Hr's a week !!!!!!! No wonder why !!!:punch:

I try a cpl hrs a day...

Unfourtanetly the area's you detected No-One happened to lose any Jewerly:ranting:There....

It's kinda like looking for a little fish in a Big pond..:throw:

you just have to be at the right spot at the right time at the right....

You'll find it if its been dropped and you happened to stumble across the "exact area"

capt, I too live in a poor sparsely populated area. I know there is still good stuff around but have not found it.I bought a house on 5 acres that used to be part of an old plantation,I have found 1 1917 lincoln cent and 4 new lincolns, qnd enough old auto parts to build a buick..Talk about being peeved.I go to the nearest kiddie totlot to find something every so often to keep me interested .

Florida has to be oneof the best beaches in the world to detect on , all those rich people in the water with expensive gold falling off , the guys who do those beaches must be loaded. :)

well Yes and No s far as florida Beaches..

I've lived in florida for 15+ YRS And I've lost more Jewerly than what I've found.....
I have lived just a few streets away from Melbourne Bch for several years and then a cpl miles from Deerfield & Pompano Bchs,

I have my GrandParents that Live in Clearwater 1/2 mile from the Bch..

And Lemme tell you You just have to be in the right spot at the Right time....and Hopefully another detectorist has woke up earlier than you and Hunted the spots that you were going to hunt...

I just recently bought an Excalibur 1000 aswell But for several years I was just using a Whites XLT...

Grass isn't always greener on the other side....

It's always hit or miss and go on to the next one..

Ohh i guess that makes me feel better knowing its crap at florida , i was thinking it was a fantastic place to hunt but i guess i was wrong - thankyou sir... Your A lucky boy living there anyhow- i live in a slum.

 Just too funny....

Florida Beaches are very nice.. I'm sorry I just can't stop laughing here:beers:

But what I'm saying is that it's just not everyday where the same Regulars" MDers" are plulling finds from the sand.....

I wish it were like that....

The reason I got into MDing was because about 12yrs ago I was "well" Skinny dippin with my girlfriend at the time... we just had an awesome dinner on Pompano Bch,Fl few glasses of Vino "Bottles" I should say....

and she wanted to go for a swim......

Well we were dressed for dinner and I said But Honey, We have no suits with us......
She said Baby, We don't need 'em......

Whoopsies.....

So I took of my Jewerly ....

24" 18K gold Figaro chain "Very Heavy" with an Anchor Charm. "Very Heavy"
that she had just spent $1,800.00 on for me just about 2 weeks earlier..

well when I took it off I placed it in my Dress Shoes and we were playing in the water...:stars:

well about 1/2hr later we noticed that the Police had drove past very slowly and we decided that they were heading our way..
So we quickly exited the water and made a mad dash for our stuff...

I grabbed my shoes and Forgot my Chain was in them....

A cpl miles down the road I was like honey We have to go back......:rage:
I dropped my Chin on the beach.....

And she said Baby I'll buy you another Tomorrow... "she was the driver"

There you go...... Next day I saw a MDer on the Bch and told him that if he found it I would Pay him More for it than a Pawn shop would give him......

And Ofcourse:ranting: He claimed he never found it.....

That's when I said to myself I need to get me one of these Riggs....

... with my Explorer and had to detect the same areas I had already gone over, I probably would quit out of frustration too. But the fact of the matter is that even though my coil has gone over every inch of every park, and I have removed all evidence of oldies including wheaties, there still is lots there. The fact is I live in a tremendous area for metal detecting. The big problem is knowing exactly what spots produced in the past. It's still in my head, but it isn't for a new detectorist. A couple hours a week of hunting would not locate those spots. I still haven't hit everything with my smaller coils or have hunted sloooooly everywhere with my bigger coils. Forgot also that I really haven't gone after the buffalo and V nickels and gold rings with the same vigor as the silver and copper coins. So many of those targets are still out there.

Will I get stuff at the same rate as in the past? No. But the one thing I have that a new detectorist with an Explorer would not have is CONFIDENCE. I know that if I expand my target range and also experiment with new sites, I should be able to find enough to keep me busy.

Guess I'm saying that a small area can be hunted out, but a large area is not easily hunted out. Unless your area truly stinks.:surrender:

Thats for sure, got a 1/2 real this morning 179? and one square nail. Used explorer II with 7" factory coil. Early this month I dug a copper from 1780"s down near stream and a dozen square nails and some were 6". This is from a hunted out park.

I was frustrated also (bored with not finding old coins) and I live in a pretty target rich environment with a great detecting club going strong. What I did was hang my detector on the wall where I could see it all the time and then took 2 years off and got into spaniel training and AKC Hunt Tests with my field bred English Cocker Spaniel. After he was trained, this year I started back detecting maybe a couple of hours here and there and have had some fantastic finds. I could put it all back on the wall any time I get "burnt out", but as long as I'm still finding some oldies I'll keep detecting. I also still do training days with my spaniel and enter hunt tests to further him along.

Well to be honest here are my dillema's (spelt wrong i think).

Detecting locally is (and i honestly mean this by the way) a complete utter waste of time . Can i find any coins locally well the answer is modern coins at a push yes old coins - no they don't exist because too many people have worked out what few sites are left or sites what were good have dissapeared under new houses or some sites that are good coin shooting sites like school fields have been fenced off so are mostly out of bounds unless you can get permission of someone which is hard usually unless you know who has the keys. Thousands of houses have been built on my old detecting land:confused: so that good finds gone too. I have recently been going furthur affeld to try new sites but as yet am pulling nothing but worthless junk out. Now i know much better
areas about 80 miles away so i might try get a little place there and try it for a while and see if i can get some old interesting or even valuable old finds because these valuable or intersting finds make it all worth while in the end DONT THEY.
Its simple really if i cannot find interesting or valuable items at my new location then i will seriously consider selling up for good this time. I can tell you this also and this is very true that sites round where i live to within 10 miles have been worked & re worked so hard you would not believe it!. Some detector users in the 70's have hammered to death woodland , parks , school fields infact the lot has been worked and re worked over the last 30 years to a high standard too, i must say who ever worked these sites years ago out made a damm good job of it.
So please forgive me for babbling on about it but its been making me so depressed of late and frustrated too. PLease lady luck give me a turn of fortune.. :(

It is tough sometimes but there is always a place to hunt that yeilds Old Coins. If you would, why don't you PM me and let me know where you live, what town that is and state, and maybe I can help you out in trying to find you some New Ground to cover. Who knows, I might just pass my Luck onto you, so please do think about it and PM me. I would be happy to try and locate a spot for you to renew that Treasure Hunters Sparkle in the eyes like a kid at a candy store looking at all the sweets in the glass cases. What do you have to lose! Hope you find something at that site you are going to and Good Luck and HH.

Thankyou for your kind offer. The distances invloved here are vast so i think i am alone here in my little part of planet earth!. My small patch here i have done hard wth many detectors and to be honest over the last few years i have done ok. Nothing of value but still found a few hundred coins.. I hope to move away to live in old land soon and find older items because my local area say about 10 miles radius of where i live is bad. When i say bad i mean its not worth doing. I have decided to move away to live rough in an old place on my own and detect old land till i die.. Pull tabs and bottletops and chewed pop tins are all that is left it seems. at least here.. Any way you can bet the se will be working overtime pretty soononce i go and live an hundred miles away!........

10 Mile Radius! No wonder you are having tough luck! I travel 60-70 Miles without even thinking about it so I have a better chance of finding some of the Old Coins and other great finds. I have been out 130 or so Miles also. This might get to be a long drive and take a chunk out of the Wallet but it is what I like to do. I like finding them Older Coins and such and when I find them, no matter what the Gas Bill was, It Was Worth It. You get out and see the Country Side and hit new Territory with the back of your mind saying "Could this be the one site that is LOADED with SILVER" and if it isn't, most of the time these new sites haven't been worked very hard, until I start working them and pulling the finds that everyone here wants to make when on their outings. Very Seldom do I ever get skunked for Old Coins. All you have to do is do a little driving and positive thinking and you will be posting finds like I do. Just remember, the offer still stands if you want me to help you out so just PM me about what Town you live in and I am sure I can come up with something that will help you find that Elusive Silver that you are so eager to find. It doesn't take me to come to your area to help you. I can do that from here and I will try if you give me the chance. I just would hate to see someone in your area detecting one day and you come along and find out that they are finding all kinds of Goodies because it was a Site you never even thought about detecting. Good Luck and HH CaptainBottleTop!
