Moving from Hawaii to Florida

Oahu_Tom

New member
Well, I'm finally going to retire after working 42+ years in the telecom industry and it's way too expensive for a retiree on a fixed income to stay in Hawaii. I will be moving in late August to Florida. I hope to settle on the east coast of Fl somewhere between Cocoa Beach & Stuart/Vero Beach/Ft Pierce areas because of the proximity to family members that live in Florida. Not too near but not very far from them.

Metal detecting has become a new hobby for me and I've actively been hunting beaches (water & dry sand) in Hawaii (Oahu) for only about two months now on weekends and days off from work. I'm looking forward to having more time to devote to it after retirement... I'm not into golf and decided I needed a hobby to take up some of my time after retirement and thought I would try metal detecting... I like it much more than I thought I would. I'm thoroughly hooked!

So,,, what I'm asking is,,, where are some good beaches to hunt after I get to Florida? East coast locations mainly but I'm also open to trying the west coast. I know that's not a good question to ask as people do not like to divulge favorite spots just as it's poor form to ask a fisherman where he caught his nice catch... But I would really appreciate just a few hints of where to hunt in a new place...

Much thanks to all who respond to this newbie in a soon to be new location...

All of florida is good (in the populated resort towns). I live in West Central Florida but as you might see all the detectorists in Florida find goodies from time to time. It aint Hawaii though.....more like Gods waiting room.

Tom, Ft. Pierce, Vero and Stuart are called the treasure coast. A Spanish treasure fleet went down in a hurricane in 1715. you won't have to go very far to detect... you think you are hooked now?? do a little research on that area.

i live in Miami for 20+ years and from south beach to up way way north to the treasure coast and up you will have alot of fun detecting!!
God I miss Florida know aim frizzing my ()*^*&^%&*^$*&% in Canada !

I hunt Cocoa Beach most of the time.A good number of people hunt this beach, but you can still make some good finds. This year has been a little slow, due to the economy and people wearing less jewelry to the beach, but I still enjoy hunting there.

I've read a little about the Spanish wrecks in that area and the occasional gold & silver finds there.. I've been told that people are not allowed to hunt in the surf there due to the wrecks and current claims on the wreck sites that reach all the way to dry sand.. Is that the case and do you have to stay completely out of the water there?
