ready-to-go off Relic Hunting.
I have found the Gold+ w/5½X10 coil to work great for me in a lot of 'average' Relic Hunting locations and I am hoping Oregon Gregg and I can get into one or two of those sites today. Just depends on how much snow has vaporized since a weekend or so back.
If they are not accessible I'll head over the Idaho direction from Oregon and we can work where we hunted on Saturday. That day I had my Gold+ w/5½X10 and FORS CoRe w/'OOR' mounted, but the amount of trash was annoying, especially a few old structure areas that abound in iron debris, mainly nails. Fortunately I had my Racer 2 along that day with the smaller coil mounted and since it features Iron Audio Volume adjustment, I grabbed it to use so I could back off on the loudness of all the small iron .... and there is a lot of it!
I also have my Racer 2 with me today just in case we end up in a worse scenario that has more dense iron debris. I really enjoy my FORS CoRe and Gold+ performance, but it would really be great to have an Iron Volume adjustment on them for the avid Relic Hunting site encounters where nails and other small iron seems to hang out. I did include a 5" DD for the Gold+ as well in case it we find a trashier place. For now, in a more modest target environment with some area to cover while trying to find old dwelling and encampment sites, I have been enjoying the performance of the Gold+ with the 5½X10 Concentric coil.
I work an area then swap to the same-size DD and re-hunt to see what, if anything, I missed, and also to figure out which of the two same-size coils I prefer. For Relic Hunting so far, it is the Concentric coil. When I get into a higher level of targets, mainly nails, I just switch to the round 5" DD coil and easily unmask the keepers that were trying to hide in the ferrous debris. It's supposed to be decent enough spring-like weather through Wednesday before more rain arrives in the area (hopefully to melt the mountain and hilly area snow cover) so we need to take advantage of it.
I did manage an old fork, a mix of old buckles, some mid-era Wheat-back pennies and a silver quarter on Saturday, so perhaps my good fortune will continue today ... somewhere. I hope others reading these forums have a day off of work on this holiday, or you're retired and can enjoy just getting off for some detecting. Grab your Nokta and coils and get out-of-town.
I need a break as I over-work myself.
