More testing coin nail

sube

Well-known member
Well I think I got some more of this figured out went into the basement and did some more test , instead of using that 4 inch nail on the dime I replaced it with a 3 inch nail which I cut in half to make it 1 1/2 inches long.

I ran the same test with high trash and ferrous coin , bang it hit me in the head the nail over the dime was smaller now ferrous coin and high trash both hit the dime at 7 inches no problem but ferrous coin was much easier to see high trash would come in not quite as good but if I looked at the screen more carefully you could see where the blocks leading up to the top were a lighter shade which made it harder to see then again sometimes it would be very vivid .

So it works similar to audio the bigger the nail the less depth you would get in trace the nail did not give audio on the east west hit at any depth except when you went north and south . So then I took 2 nails a inch and a half and x them like in my video trying to kill the audio both ways which it did same results 7 inches no problem .

So on to a more realistic test outside in (dirt) same results but it started to struggle at 8 inches Fresh dug hole dime nail .

It would be nice if someone could do this in there dirt and let us know if you have hot soil and give us your results .:):):) sube

Sube, Are you using discrimination in these tests?

No the only reason I am using open screen is to show it clearer you can use as much disc as you want and it still shows it . However once you disc out the nails you can not tell how the nail is laying the double hit compared to the signal hit going north south . A thing about the north south hit it's still a double hit you can see it in my video but it's hard to hear when sweeping normal but when I approached the north south hit when I say dead there is that space between the pencil line and nail that's giving no audio .It's a lot easier to use ferrous coin because it isn't working the same as the other modes the nail I am using is large and is almost trying to kill the trace so if you downsize the nail to say 1 1/2 inches this will clear most of this up because now the dime is not masked as well and can be seen in real (dirt) or basement much easier to 7 inches if you can not see the cursor fill try lowering the coil till you see the cursor filling then go deeper .

I'm still working on high trash it's just different outside I was able to build the trace better at 7 inches then inside don't no if high trash has to have dirt on it or not.

I am almost believing that the trace is directly tied to the audio when in high trash if you watch the video closely The iron bin in the corner where the trace is coming from is very weak having a hard time getting out of there but all of a sudden it pops out of there and shows a vivid trace with (AUDIO) when I say audio that's that high tone you hear for a split second where there was no audio in that dead spot before . So that pop and vivid trace are they confirming that now the machine knows there is a non ferrous item there . Then I looked at it this way forget trace and look at it as if it was (AUDIO TRACE) the audio is weak and all of a sudden it pops out of the corner giving that pop has the audio finally broken free of the irons nulling falsing and suppression of the nonferrous item .Now ferrous coin on the other hand you can hear this pop every now and then but when you hear the pop the cursor fills more rapidly than without the pop. Also when you here that pop in audio you will see the fc numbers change higher is this because the machine just got a clearer picture of what it's seeing .

Now as to north south hits your numbers are always higher fc just the same as if you cross the target when the audio picks this hit the iron only drags down the numbers 1or 2 on the conductive side where as a weaker hit because of the nail being more effective at masking east west hit will drag the numbers down 10 or 15 or lower on the conductive side but using different size nails makes these fc numbers change higher or lower

Go to the minelab manual and read these two carefully ferrous coin separation and high trash separation you will get a idea why they act differently .

I was going to try some other things out like when I got that pop in audio maybe put the machine in pitch hold and see if the audio stays on the screen just to verify that the audio is tied to trace There are so many possibility here it's going to take time .

Maybe we should do what I did before and just turn off the volume like I did for a hour long time without audio and just try and find something now your not hampered by the audio and you can just concentrate on the screen trace fc numbers and target location on the screen I can guarantee that you will (SEE) you will learn from this.

I'm glad more people are really starting to look at this it will only speed up the visual side of this . sube
