More Sovereign XS questions...

Since so many praise the XS, I guess I'll keep despite the low external speaker volume. Other than that it seems to work very well. It came with the Coin Search coil and a non-numeric meter with an expanded and normal range. Whatever those are? I unhooked the meter and am using a Whites straight rod with XS in blue ML bag around my neck. The built in meter mod sounds interesting and I will look into it if still available. It has 2 battery packs/charger and also a pair of 4 AA battery holders.

I have a pair of Sun Ray Gold phones on the way. I recall others have praised the Coin Search coil? It seems nice and light, but not waterproof? I took the coil cover off and took a close look at it. It seams sealed everywhere- so where would water enter the coil? Seems like it would float! I did not see a mention in the down-loaded manual saying not to submerge the coil?

Either way, I think I would like some aftermarket coils for it. For beach hunting the 12X10 SEF? What about the Sun Ray 8 to replace the Coin Search for all-around hunting? And an SR 5 for trashy areas? Would those 3 make a good combo. Any other suggestions? SH34.

I just got an 8" Tornado coil today for my wife's new Sovereign GT. I hope to give it a spin on the beach tomorrow....

On the coinsearch coil: if you unscrew the flex connector which is not the nut directly attached to the coil but the one above it, you will see an O ring on the coil cable. That is where water can get it. Yes the coinsearch coils are buoyant and are excellent on the beach so if your not gonna wade you have a good coil there. They really shine in brush areas and like that because they are not open spider coils and dont get hung up on stuff like an S8 or others. The SEF coil is a good one also, one of my favorites, but I dont like wading with them, to much resistance by design of the coil.

I find the 8 inch coinsearch would do well in the trashy areas i had hunted and got better depth than the 5 inch coil, was able to get over 12 inches in a trashy park on dimes and pennies could be the reason i fell so strong on the 8 inch coinsearch coil. I do know the S8 of Sun Rays will even work better in some of the heavy trash as I feel the hot band is smaller so it can pick out coins close to trash better.
For a big coil I like the S-12 of Sun Ray over anything else I have tried, but never tried one of the 10X12 SEF coils, but have a Friend up here that has tried one and thought something was wrong with it, sent it back and got another one and it too would give a low tone on quarters and a broken up tone on half's so he tried a S-12 and it works great with good tones and great depth too. As you notice you will see some used 10X12 for sale, but it is rare to find a used S-12.
