I can't say there is some detector out there that doesn't have a voltage regulator but even my 1985 Whites model did. Think about it , if it didn't have a regulator your detector would keep losing performance as your batteries were losing voltage. These voltage regulators have a working limit and I would say cooking is a probablity for sure. My new MXT has a 12v pack, but it doesn't operate at that voltage. Lets say the working voltage is 8v, the voltage regulator then supplies my detector with 8v no matter what the battery pack voltage is as long as it is 8v or above. My regulator has a safe voltage limit of 13.4v. Any more and the regulator could be toast. So I would think you wouldn't increase you working voltagejust cause damage. Rob
