Found in area believed to date to the 1700's.One old coin collector suggested a cover lock for flint lock gun?.Thanks Chuck S.C.

At least a decorative top off of something.

Thanks for looking,it is very heavy and looks to be lead with another small hole in side and crued.See associated items found on metal detecting forum under Carolina History, found with colonial buttons, musket balls etc.....that is a quarter for size.

I saw a show were they said on the end of a colonial pistol it was made with a heavy object so if the pistol shot did not put the enemy down one could strike with the butt of the pistol. This is a crude and heavy lead cover. It was found near colonial shoe buckle and button.I have prayed to find a piece of a colonial gun.Could this be it?.

This would not have gone on a gun. It has a squared hole to accept the shank of a balde, possibley a sword but more likely a knife or dagger. It bears no resemblance to lead that has been in the ground, and is most likely brass with perhaps the remains of some gilding. There are thousands of pommels to search, but eventually you'll find one that is fairly close to this one.

There are tons of folks who participate in the SCA (Society for Creative Anacronism)...They make their own weapons and armour, and this could be from something recently made also...

HH,
