More goodies with the 5x8 coil!

Managed to get out to the pounded park today with my buddy Ron. I met up with Ron around 3pm, hopped in his car and did a quick survey thru the park. While we were driving around, he set todays goal for 1 silver and 1 Indian for each of us. Seemed legit to me and a goal within reach.

We found this park bench that is facing a hillside with a lot of woods around it. We found this spot a few weeks ago and put it on the back burner for another time. Today was good enough as any and Ron quickly pulled the car over when I pointed out the spot again. We geared up and headed over to the spot and it was some tough digging. We didn't find anything near the bench except deep trash. The area was definitely filled in more recently with fist-sized rocks and about 2 inches of dirt on top. We decided to move a little further down the walkway and we each hit one side of the walkway. About 10 minutes later I came across a rather bouncy high tone that was relatively shallow. The numbers bounced all over the place from the low 80's all the way up to 96. The tone sounded good, but had a little bit of sputter towards the end of the swing. I dug a shallow plug, flipped it over and stuck the pro pointer in the hole. It sounded off loud and clear, I took my hand shovel and scooped away some dirt and seen a silver dime. I yelled out to Ron that I just completed the first half of today's goal. He came over and I plopped the dirty Merc in his hand. Now I know better than to give a competitor one of my finds to check out, so I said "If you rub that coin before me, I'll kick your $$$" lol! He quickly gave the coin back to me with a smirk on his face. I then proceeded to rub the coin to reveal no mintmark. I stuck the shiny in my pouch and continued on.

About 30 minutes goes by and I see Ron hunting the side of the walkway I was working and concentrating more along the wooded edges near the walkway. I slowly worked my way along and came across a nickel signal. The numbers were bouncing from 52 - 55 and lately these numbers have always been pulltabs for me. I haven't dug an old nickel in a couple of weeks so I said to myself while I was looking for the target how about a nickel today? After brushing over the loose dirt with the pro pointer, I seen the edge of a nickel! I wiped off the good side to reveal a nice Buff. Unfortunately it needs to be soaked a good while to get any kind of date off the front. I yelled out to Ron again that I just got a Buff. I think that set him off because he was frantically swinging like a mad man along the wooded edges.

About 20 minutes goes by and Ron started working the opposite way back along the edges. I decided to go over some of the ground he did to see if the 5x8 could sneak something out. I got a choppy signal about 3 feet into the wooded edges between a few saplings. I couldn't see the screen due to the angle I was hunting and hanging on for dear life to the hillside. It was so damn steep, I was sliding halfway down when digging the plug lol. I stuck the pro-pointer in the shallow hole and recovered a clad dime. When I first pulled it out it had a bit of silver shine coming thru. The first thought that came to mind was there was another coin that was stuck to it in the hole still. I stuck the pro pointer back in the hole and there wasn't anything else there. I then proceeded to wipe the dirt away to reveal a 1947 date. Silver again! I yelled out to Ron saying just got a Roosie! He said you gotta be kidding me, I was just right there. After a few I'm sorrys, we continued on the hunt. Ron ended up getting a 44 wheatie in that section and then we ran out of real estate and hit another part of the park.

We get to the other part of the park and pretty much struck out. Nothing old to be had from this area. Ron unfortunately was out of hunt time and dropped me off at my truck. After he left I decided to stick it out to see if I could nab an Indian to complete the 2nd half of today's goal. I decided my best approach would be to start in an area where I've recovered several Indians over the last 2 seasons. I hit this one particular hillside and kept getting garbage tones and crap signals. I moved further down to an area that I hunted once before but never got any oldies out of. I came across a 84 - 85 signal that had a little depth to it. Dug a nice plug and was rewarded with the junk religious medallion. It had a clear plastic face on both sides that broke apart when I wiped it off. It preserved the gold color nicely. About 20 minutes later I'm hunting around this park bench where I've been getting electrical interference. I was hunting 1 bar below max Sens today and lowered it down another bar to get the machine more stable. I came across a really faint wheat penny signal around 6 inches. The machine was really struggling to produce a consistent tone, but it was definitely repeatable in both directions. Numbers bounced a bit from 80 - 85. I dug a nice plug and flipped it over. I stuck the pro pointer in the hole and it produced a weak chirp dead center at the bottom of the hole. I scooped out 2 inches of dirt and stuck the pointer back in. This time the signal was loud and clear, again dead center at the bottom of the hole. I scooped out another 2 inches and was rewarded with what I thought was a wheatie. I wiped away the dirt on the reverse side to reveal a wreath and shield. I was speechless. After a bit of spit shine, I revealed a 1909 date. Unfortunately there was no "S" mintmark. After completing the 2nd half of the day's goal I decided to call it a day.

On my way swinging towards the truck I got a nice 77 - 78 repeater at 4 inches. Dug down to reveal a nice battle scarred (by me) arcade token. All in all, not a bad day. HH!

Nice-----Patience, persistence and a well thought plan sure goes a long way----HH---------IB

Yep, patience and persistence is what it takes in those trash laden and hard hunted spots. And you seem to have it. Good job and nice hunt and write up. HH jim tn

You got some great finds there Eric! Glad the 5 x 8 coil is working out for you. It's one of my favorites too.
