More early wheats and a run in with the groundskeeper

Well-known member
I went back to the tree root area and pulled a few more wheat cents. 1918, 1920,1935 &1944 and a bunch of clad. If you notice the coin in the upper right (1935) it is dark compared to the rest. Well, It was massively "caked" in green. So I first tried peroxide and that did little... so I heated the coin up on the stove and then placed it in a cup of ice water. This shocked the green right off the penny. On this coin (1935) it was pretty deep @ 9 -10" My reading on my meter went like this: it climbed up into the 170's. I super wiggled the coil and got it briefly to 180. I then turned and the meter was jumping 158 -164 -166 back to 164 and a little hard to pinpoint. I dug and dug on this coin. right passed the steel gaurd on the lesche digger is where I stopped digging when I finally pulled the 1935 wheat.

I started thinking about this park I was at and the coins that I have been pulling....Before this current park, part of this park was part of another park back in the early 1800's to early 1900's. but I wasn't exactly sure where the old horse race track and agricultural fairs were held. Then here comes the groundskeeper on his little bobcat loader. He drives up and motions for me to pull off my headphones. He asks me, "Why are you wasting your time here? this place has been picked clean and there is nothing left. He then proceeds to tell me about the park that use to be here. Well, I was literally standing on it lol. He then told me the layout and told me I had free reign EXCEPT in the gated ballpark as it is absolutely off limits. He then tells me he metal detects and found a 1793 (yes I wrote the year right) Connecticut Copper and a silver mercury dime inside the ballpark. ( I am thinking to myself there is more than that in the gated ballpark)My heart sunk lol. I Now realized all the articles I read about the agricultural fairs and horse races back in the1800's were right on this site. All the old outbuildings that use to be here..... The other section has just been done over for a "mega" kids playground. I just started picturing how it was set up from all the articles I had read. He then tells me about this park down the street that they scraped the topsoil off of (a park that dates back to 1918 ) He said for me to hit it and concentrate on this other park as they will be soon installing a new playground on the site. I realize after going to this other park this evening, it was his ulterior motive to get me out of the other one. The park down the street still had 12 inches of gravel and mulch in the playground. I can't say that I don't blame him for protecting his secret. I knew about it too I just wasn't too clear how the two parks overlapped. Now that the "cat is out of the bag" I'll be back.

Thanks for looking - Jim

thats good he did not kick you out , I hate it when people say you will not find anything they are worse than the retuning 10 spys who spied out the land of cannan and brought a badd report and discouraged the hearts of the people , I know this when a duck has a nice nest eggs he draws you away with his broken wing trick sounds like thats what is going on you are close to a real nest egg full of goodies, and what a co in sidance you also met the grounds keeper thear just may be a sweet spot full of godies never found . keep at it be wise

Interesting story!! That dude was shining you big time!! Nice wheats you found there. When I get those cruddy ones, I just soak them in a little lemon or lime juice for a couple hours and the crud comes right off. Apple cider vinegar works too. A little rubbing with the Brilliant Polishing Cloth and they look like new again. Shoot, they're just wheats, not really any value to them once they've been in the ground that long.

Ahh the tale's that the competition will tell to keep you off what they feel is their patch............. don't they just hate you finding stuff that they have been unable to find....

I have the unfortunate displeasure of one detectorist who gives me all sorts of 'helpful' hints........

Will be interesting to see what else you can find here... good luck..

Yep,

I believe I was getting too close to a good spot and mother duck tried throwing me off lol I am going to go back this weekend.

Hi BCD,
True story with EPL getting "shined" lol. The other park was 2 minutes down the street. So it is not like I got suckered driving 4 towns over lol. Thanks for the cleaning tips. I found an 1918 wheat today at the park where the groundskeeper said there is nothing left. I am going to soak it in lemon juice and see how it comes out. I tell ya the ground here in CT is unfriendly to wheat cents that is for sure. Take care and happy hunting. - Jim

The groundsman cant work 7 days per week...keep at it, and if you can, take different detectors from time to time...it can make a difference in what you find.

Hi furious T,

He can work 7 days a week if he wants lol I'll be detecting while he is driving around on his little bob cat loader. I only have the one detector (Sov GT) and in the last week found IH cents, Wheats and one silver dime right on the other side of the ballfield near the main road. Oooops I think he forgot to check to see if his detector was on. I am going to try and get back there this Saturday or Sunday.

By trying different detectors if you have others.
I know i did one corner boulevard that was about 10 foot wide by 50 foot long on the front and 10 foot by 50 or so on the side with more found in the front. I used my Sovereign GT a Sovereign XS, my Explorer II, my Shadow X5 and tried my wife's MXT too with all finding coins and other misc items after I had been over it with one of the other detectors, Some were deep, some were with other trash items, some not too deep and some on edge. The secret is going slow with a good set of headphones and listening close and even trying different sweep speed on some iffy signals. In that one area my coin count was 128 with 3 barber dimes that were very nice shape, many older wheat in the early years with one a 1909 VBD (wish it would have had a S mint mark) and know a few merc and silver Rosie's plus some buffalo and war nickles, but no big silver other than some new quarters. I would say without looking at my paper work it was about 50 50 of new verses older coins. I was told before I started I wouldn't find anything as 2 people been over it with detectors before about 3 or 4 years ago. I also got a model A hub cap and some old pieces of of older toys that was deep and a key tag from a local hotel that is no longer there (1901-195:geek:
I would go back and try it again with the E-Trac, but the person that own the house has since sold it. The yard had been filled so only got a few new coins and 1 buffalo. I feel I did OK with all the detectors, but seem the GT and the XS seem to sniff out more iffy signals.

Hi Rick,

That is pretty impressive for being "worked out" This area the guy wanted me out of has monster (some as big as a yard stick in diameter ) pine trees lining the border. From the size, I would surmise they were there when the property was used for agricultural fairs and as a horse track. Now, I just need to get back there and devote some time under these big trees.
