The road into this area is 30 miles of dirt. This day, the road was dry and solid. In the summer it turns to a powdered sugar type of dust that is about a food deep. You can imagine what that is like to drive in with a tail wind that you cannot outrun. (cough and gag icon here) I have been back in here when the rains came, and it turns into a sea of mud that can strand you until it dries out.

The thing about this area is the tremendous varity of rocks and minerals that you can find. The rock formations take on forms of a geology text book. This hill looks like it has been worked, but it is natural,

When looking for gold, one thing you look for is quartz. This is a picture of the bare ground. You can see a varity of quartz pebbles just laying on the top. The lava boulders here have quartz running through the formations. Pretty cool gold country!

On this hill we began to find large, heavily mineralized quarts rocks. Jim is following the quartz float up hill to see where it came from. In theory, the float will lead you uphill until you find the lode it came from. Just over the top of the picture, the slope lesssens a little, and the rocks turned into boulders of quartz, and then stopped. The last quartz was huge and almost completely buried. The lode should be here.

This is a view down the creek where I found the deer skull. You can see some snow in the shadey side of the canyon. Off in the distance is a ledge of rock that looks like lava. I have been over to them and it is not lava but sedimentry rock. The boulders are as big as as a house that have fallen off and rolled down hill. Makes you wonder how they got there.

We like to think we are hunting gold when we go over to this place, but we spend a lot of time just enjoying the views and looking for cool rocks to bring home. I brought home a lot of incredible rocks and minerals from here. Just about any kind of rock or mineral can be found here and it make a great trip for us. You know, the type of folks who look at the ground just to see if anything shiny or different is there. I think that couriosity is what makes us like detecting. Wow, what will we find next?!!!
