More depth? If your soil is light to mid mineral......

Loose the stock DD coil and add the 9.5 concentric. It works.

Why? I have both coils and we have low mineralization in south eastern Michigan.

I might be inclined to agree with WCH. I think the 9.5 allows for a slower search speed (even with lower filters), This can be a real advantage in adding inches in areas without a lot of mineralization.

Unfortunately my only 950 coil is not "V" nulled, so I need to stick to the D2.

DD coils loose depth in good ground. You will be able to increase your use able gain in good ground.using the concentric .Try a ground probe reading to determine your conditions. In Virginia we have the worst and best soil. With the DD in good ground the recommended gain is between 3 to 6. What?????????????????? With the 9.5 concentric in the same ground it recommends 12. The depth increase is dramatic. Smooth performance even with boost on. Try it. This detector was made with the idea of competing with the Minelabs. In my opinion using the DD coil as a stock item was a mistake unless you hunt in ground of high minerals. Most of you do not. This makes new users who do not understand their ground conditions think there is something wrong with the machine. No tatter no-one thinks anyone is triple stupid. Ground minerals will decide how a detector performs. Your ability to select the proper coils, adjustments will make or break you. Forty years in the field testing all brands , makes and models.

Your 950 should work fine Neil. You might encounter an overload with Boost on though. That is where the V null comes in handy.

...the D2 coil is not as well balanced and is awkward. I too noticed that I never got a gain recommendation higher than 8. With the 950 the machine is better balanced and easier to swing with gain recommendations at 12+ with TX boost on. I was reading eagle buttons at 10"-12" with a solid VDI. The 6x9 DD in my opinion is a better coil than the D2 and I would challenge someone that has a V nulled 6x9 to test it against the D2 and post your results. In my opinion too much emphasis is placed on the signal degredation and the recommended gain settings when adjusting the machine based on the ground probe. Pay closer attention to noise % and jack up the gain until the machine overloads or becomes too unstable. Then, before I would back off on the gain I would try to adjust the frequency. Try to find some mid ground between stability and gain. This is a powerful machine when its properly set up. I think White's hit the bullseye with this one with the exception of the stock coil. Its as complicated or as simple as you want it to be.

I have both the V nulled 9.5 and D2. Both are excellent coils for me. My 9.5 always gives me a higher recommended RX then my D2, but here in Illinois my D2 is still deeper. Our soil is loaded with iron and our water is filled with iron. I've done testing with both. For me with the center mount position of the D2 seems better balanced for me. I will be using the V in Texas for the winter months. The soil there has fewer minerals and the 9.5 might prove to better coil, I will see. I do know the 9.5 is the preferred coil for the beach. The D2 is my go to coil now. I've got a deep dime the D2 will see, my 12" concentric will not.

The signal strength on the bottom of the screen is going to tell you generally how strong the ground is. You want to take into consideration the signal strength too. If you have ground coming in at -94(VDI) with a signal strength of 2% and another ground coming in at -91 with a signal strength of 7%, it would seem to me that the ground coming in at -91 is more mineralized even though it is a less negative VDI. AK is correct, the "severity" of the ground has more to do with the signal strength than the phase. The phase tells you composition (between purely ferrous and purely salt), while the signal strength tells you the concentration. - Carl

Man, that is very interesting. Been wondering why I havent been able to go higher thqan 7-8 on the gain. I'm gonna put my 950 on and try that.
Thanks alot!
