Yesterday Mike and I picked up where we left off - just feet away from where he pulled the Seated dime last hunt. Had a slow start - finally got a deep 1903 Indian cent under the coil at about 8.5" deep in the same hole as a rusty bolt. Mike initialy started hunting with a Fisher ID Edge but became disappointed when I suggested planting a 7" deep nickel to see how it responded. This detector struggled to get the nickel, and most of the time we both pull 8-10" deep coins, so the ID Edge was not going to cut it here....
While Mike changed detectors, I took a break from hunting, and changed my settings just slightly. I ended up for the rest of the hunt using this 4kHz program:
4khz
Sens 80
Full Tones
Reactivity 1
Silencer 1
Disc 1
Notch 00-20, 98-99
Audio Response 3
Manual GB 85
Notch Ground 86-89
I was after those targets that were 9" and beyond, and I slowed my sweep speed down to get a better "look" into the ground. Dug the usual aluminum bits and deep nails, but I finally found a target that squeaked nothing but high tones. It was such a faint hit that I changed into Reactivity 2 to my usual program, and had more trouble getting the target...this one was a 9" deep 1904 Barber dime! I was getting worried that I'd lost the ability to find silver since Mike had pulled two Seated in a week...but I'm still happy with my 1909 S Wheat LOL from 2 weeks ago....
About 15 feet away Mike pulls a nice 1910 Barber dime with his Fisher Coinstrike....that detector keeps proving itself in this worked-out area!!! Then shortly after he pulls a deep Indian dated 1902...we were neck and neck on this hunt...both of us with one Barber dime and one Indian cent apiece. I went on to find a Buffalo nickel that I'd planted several weeks ago (doesn't count LOL), and Mike went on to find an "unplanted" Buffalo nickel for himself!
Time was drawing to a close - I wanted just one more coin....the rain started to pick up and was trying to push us out of our spot! Mike had to leave a little early because of the rain - for the fact that the Coinstrike isn't waterproof. As he walks to his car I get a high-pitched broken signal, and at 8" deep out comes a nearly uncirculated 1942 S Merc!!! The S-mint streak is alive again! There was more action in the hole, but the rain was getting too hard, so I left it for next time.
I am literally salivating at the new Deus software version coming out next month - I've actually had dreams of finding 12-13" deep coins with v4.0 - While I don't expect it to perform quite THAT well - if I can eke another 1-2" max depth -AND- ignore some of the smaller aluminum, then I'd be one happy hunter!
