I guess being out in the rain for most of the day digging is either a sign of stupidity or love for m-d-in lol. In the same area as the adze I posted these were dug today, According to research the area was in close proximity to a privately funded lock system that was built around the 1830's and ceased operation about 1880. The 1st chisel still has a decent sharp to it, the following two I believe were used for the bedrock that's everywhere including the bottom of the river, it's no deeper then knee high (when the locks were working the river was close to 10 feet deep) looks like a falling axe head, and the last no idea, with a good squeeze it can be bent a bit by hand (non-magnetic). 2 sleigh bells (very thin brass) and a bit of clad up near the house. Still lots of ground to cover and also the water in the later spring. I walked about 10 acres plotting the hot spots with the Atg for the next available day with sunshine and a bit of warmth. Not a place with loads of public trash but lot's of good tone. So maybe the next outting will offer up some cool finds as well.
Cheers an hh

It's amazing what people will leave behind or toss in the water. There is a little creek running through here and I found an old long handled spade and two pitch forks in it. Both forks had a broken tine. I wonder if the forks were used to pull up the fresh water clams in this very shallow water body ? Some of the ''Little Big Horn'' Sioux lived in this location for many years and a few were buried along the edge of the valley hills, facing the rising sun..... Sounds like you have an interesting spot there.

Thanks Un, yes it is and it has not been detected before, the neighbor may grant me pass on his frontage as well and thats where the 3rd lock was at, it was a pull canal with oxen teams for the cargo boats to get through the shallows there. I hope to be ablt to get those copper pieces done soon as you'll love to see them.

You've got a history rich spot there, Jon! I always enjoy learning some local lore as I research finds.

Very cool Oldtimey stuff...thinking gold coin in the old canal somewhere....sure its a longshot...but hey, a fellow needs a dream.:please:

Thanks William, same here, love getting the history before and more often after then trying to visualize it all to get the head idea of what folks did and where they went, kind of like gettin in their heads to finds their habits of yore to get more detecting results eh lol.

Definitely a dream is what a fellow needs Mud, I like your kind of thinking, the cool part is this river floor it's public domain throughout so there may be lot's of wading in the spring lol.

Cheers and hh
