more confidence with the Cortes today

I searched for about 45 mins in an area I've pounded with other detectors.. an area that has yielded finds from the early 1800's. The area is littered with old Iron. the Cortes handled the Iron very well. Surprisingly ....I didn't dig any.

I didn't find anything worth keeping, but I did learn that trash targets gave repeatable #'s.

For example: 2 different aluminum cans both came up at 95 while swinging in discrimination and they registered at 85 while in sum mode.

I'm finding Sum mode to be useful in combination with discrimination. You could easily not use the sum mode ...I can see that, but I like that it gives a little more info.....for example the low tones for Iron.....it helps to size the targets too. the #'s it gives on certain targets are consistent. I look at the bars too, but I find I'm not using them as much.

I did dig one target that I assumed would be iron by the way it sounded louder and seemed to drift while pinpointing. I was able to pinpoint by X'ng down to a softball size area and got repeated 95's so I dug it. It ended up being a a ruler size piece of aluminum that was scrunched into a zigzag shape. I thought it would be junk, but it was iffy enough to dig.

I've dug aluminum like this with my Explorer II in the same area.

So far its ability to ID trash and the same like trash repeatedly tells me I should be able to cherry pick with good accuracy.

I was hunting a woodsy area. Good repeatable signals were few and far between so I was more likely to dig anything that repeated while I was learning the machine.

The experience initially left me wanting a cibola or vaquero for the woods.....they're quicker. Once again I found myself analyzing signals with a Target ID machine when I would happier with a beep and dig.

After thinking about the things I did dig and how I'm really starting to trust this detector I'm beginning to believe it will hold its own against my favored beep and digs in over all performance.

I was able to ID iron very easily with the Cortes. The beep and digs don't do as well in that department.. so in that sense my hunting will be more efficient ....maybe more efficient than with the beep n digs?????

I think the Cortes will be far stronger in high trash areas for cherry picking....areas where digging may be frowned on like parks..........which is exactly what I want right now.

digitaltim,

Thanks for the info, this post will make into my metal detecting binder. I ordered my Cortes on Friday from DeMarco Metal Detector. I can't wait to put it to work like the other detectors I have bought recently.

Happy Hunting,

Good info - guess I'll have to try and remember to use the sum mode more often - but that was my problem. After sweeping over a target a few time, I checked the confidence bars on the last few swing then decided to dig or not dig. Couldn't sink it in my mind to use the sum mode and the sum mode was probably the biggest reason I bought the Cortes. I have no explanation - :rage:

I should have added that the bars are useful for nulled Iron, because the detector can go silent, but the bars will still show what's discriminated...

so far the detector has been honest..... there's is a lot of info and for the most part its all easy to read

I'm hoping to get out to a park with it tomorrow......

I went to a park today, but forgot my headphones......I was having a hard time getting everything together + my toddler.

The Cortes should have a volume control........the beep is loud enough to be heard from a distance

The noise is very loud without headphones. My son tried it without headphones and I had to tell him to plug them things back in. I know what you mean about the bars on iron. I notice very quick when the bars seem to go somewhat random, compared to a good lock on a good target. I can see how it's known as confidence bars.

If you watch the confidence bars you will notice they "splash across the screen" when it comes to iregularly shaped junk targets. When they are tight and concentrated its usually a good target...................even if the target is deep..... this characteristic stays. That is quite useful in high junk areas and aids in cherry picking!!

They did lock on to coins accurately........

I only found clad though.

I went to a park and I tried to dig pull tabs....I dug 2 pieces of foil on a fresh water beach that was very clean. I've searched this beach before and with other detectors and found its littered with chunks of deep Iron, but very clean of everything else.........its probably detected. I skimmed over it. I knew where the Iron is the worst and the Cortes handled it very well.

On land I dug a pencil eraser, a small dime size aluminum bottle cap, and some pull tabs...I want to find some rings. I tried to only dig strong repeatable #'s in the foil - zinc area.

I don't think I'll be able to cherry pick rings .............like any other detector I just have to dig lots of junk to find them. Maybe in time I'll get better at it.

Once I got sick of digging junk I turned the discrimination up and the next 5 digs were coins.

Once again iron was easy to discriminate and I did not dig any. I think this may be the best detector yet for ignoring Iron. It'll find it, but its easy to see its Iron before you dig.

.................find gold rings with the Cortes; don't miss this very important tip!!! Your disc must be set NO HIGHER than the half way point; from " min" to "iron" on the discrimination dial. This will ensure that your detector gets the deeper gold ...not just the surface stuff. In addition sweep with the coil at 3 " above ground and yes...........set the sensitivity to " 4" no I'm not kidding..............no higher than 4!!! Then go out into your favorite park and get ready to be surprised. I'm up to about 30 rings found with my Cortes........all in parks and soccer fields only!!! Final point...... really watch for those tight number sequences.........if the numbers only vary about between 2 or 3 numbers ...it's party time. Example in a really trashy sideline area of a soccer field, most of my pulltabs were coming up 24 to 34 some even flared out to 36........once I identified this "crap zone" as I call it in this case; I stop digging those ranges............my odds of finding goodies go up. Sure enough I find a tight 18 to 21 reading .....screams dig me!!!! So I do.... small ladies 14K ring.......................moments later another reading 28 to 32 fairly consistent....................dig it up ... mens medium 10 K band. Tight numbers on the meter and tight women,,,,,,,these are good things!!! Sweep slower as well. Please give this a try and post your results and exploits but only the one reffering to detecting!!!! LOL LOL

pieces and pulltabs. Pieces of shredded aluminum cans fooled me with tight numbers. So then I placed a ladies gold ring on the ground and saw that the bar stayed steady and the numbers didn't vary much. But when I buried that ring 3" deep, 3 different bars kept popping up and the numbers varied a lot. Then I dug a piece of shredded aluminum can that gave me jumping bars and numbers. But when placed on top of the ground that same piece gave a steady bar and tight numbers. It seems like the meter gets jumpy when the metal is buried.
