More chat with the newbie...

Ive been sharing some of the correspondence I've been enjoying with several newbs, in hopes that everyone can learn from it. Here's a bit of todays chat:
Turn the discrim down and "use the discrim you have between your ears." to quote the book. Really good reading!!
I agree, but it is nice to have some information to work with, so your brain discriminator can do it's job! I have become quite the fan of TID machines since using my Garretts. In fact, I just got a XXXXXXX to try - it has a 4+2 tone audio ID format.

Of course no ID machine is perfect, but thay are accurate enough these days to be useful. It wasnt always so. I used to be a die hard "One Beep, Thumb the Knob", sort of hunter, because TID technology was pretty rough when I got started. But I seem to have changed with the times - imagine that! ;)

He also talked about pinpointing was a little awkward (on the Ace 250).
It can be. Learn the MindsEye Pinpoint Technique that I've recommended and you can do better and save time in the process.
Remember, too, that the pinpoint button on the Ace 250 can "detune" the target for you , which really helps in locating it.

Question for you,..... I am thinking that with my next machine that I am not going to get something that runs in silent search as the Ace does. I want to hear deep tones also instead of the 3 ID tones. LISTEN TO ME, I HAVE A GREAT MACHINE AND WANT MORE????

Its human nature to want more, Travis. But, keep in mind that the Ace has a boost feature which amplifies deeper targets to much the same level as shallower ones - yet deep targets still will signal SHORTER. That is, they will give a short duration beep, as opposed to shallow ones, which give a longer duration response tone (I shake my head when I realize all that Garrett has put into the Ace 250!)

However, Ive gotten to where I can go either way. I'd just as readily listen for concise, clear blips, which I can then process as I want, as I would having to squeeze my ears to listen for subtle changes in amplitude - I have just gotten spoiled by my Garretts is the real truth. ::)

Now, I do prefer a threshold hum, as you are suggesting. To me it's "comforting" - there are those who would laugh at that.
My 1350 allows it and some of the upper end Whites...maybe others, too. But it really isnt needed these days - it used to be, "way back when" - and most discriminators are set up as silent search detectors. You'll "buy up" in features to get it, anymore. I suggest you look at the upper end Garretts and Whites if you want to go that route...

Keep learning, man
David
