Do you know of any plans in the near future for Tesoro to make improvements to the Tejon? I bought one and traded it because I just did not like the quality of the machine. (the performance was great)
I did not like the small grip(the diameter),the paint was already coming off the top pole, the decals were not straight, the lower rod moved even when tightened all the way,the cable was not heavy duty and I hated the aa batteries.I traded for a x5 and I know I may loose some performance but my main reason was quality.I guess that some of the things I mentioned are like they are for cost.If the shadow does all it does with a 9 volt battery why can't the Tejon. I would love to see Tesoro come out with a model of the Tejon with the same quality as the shadows and with no alt.disc. and using a 9 volt battery.I myself would be willing to pay more for the same performance but a higher quality machine.I know.... it has a life time warranty and before anyone gets mad I am not bashing the Tejon, I am just saying what I would like to have because I really like Tesoros. Another thing I abosolutely hate the colors.
thanks ronnie

Why do you think you're going to lose some performance ? You actually may gain some performance.
I guess we get what we pay for. No free lunch..

John I am not sure I will loose anything with the x5. I have a x3 and an x5 and I like them both.I would like to have a Tejon also but I am kind of picky about quality and I just do not see it in the Tejon. I have only been detecting about 18 months but some of the big time guys here in the carolinas that have used shadows for the last year have switched to the Tejon. I guess thats why I said I may loose a little performance.I like the shadows and tesoro and would like to use both. ronnie

Its a funny world as I'm never happy with 9 volt batteries, I'd rather have AA's. Have to agree about the finish not being up to that we have come to expect from Tesoro. Hopefully thats been sorted with the later production runs.
I'm suprised you don't like the two discrimination modes. You don't have to use then but its a handy feature to have.

Brian, it is not that I don't like the dual disc.,I was just thinking that without it the machine could be a little smaller and use less power and therefore use a 9 volt battery.I realize that you can not satisfy everyone (like you liking the aa's and me liking the 9 volt)but I think there are several items that could be improved that we all would like. ronnie

....just made it to accept either 6 AAs or 1 9v ???
Naaaah, too simple! <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">

You stated the AA give longer life ? It depends on the unit. The X5 runs about 25 hours on a single 9v which is very convenient, and less costly. Better to carry one 9v spare than a whole slew of AA's.
Also, what areas, performance wise, do you consider the Tejon superior?
John

Right on Ralph
My problem with PP3's could be down to our U.K. chargers. All seem to have a push the battery down a hole system which stresses the connectors. Then they are either lose and don't charge, or so tight that a bit of lug gets broken off when you pull them out.

We're NOT having a typical winter right now! We got about 5" of snow yesterday, melted/compacted to about 3"-4", then froze solid last night. Black ice everywhere. I had visions of ending the year with another day or two of detecting. Guess it wasn't meant to be. Also doesn't look like I'll get a great start in 2004, either. <img src="/metal/html/cry.gif" border=0 width=40 height=15 alt=":cry">
Okay, to answer your comment & question:
<STRONG>"You stated the AA give longer life? It depends on the unit. The X5 runs about 25 hours on a single 9v which is very convenient, and less costly. Better to carry one 9v spare than a whole slew of AA's."</STRONG>.... All the detectors are power regulated, so the amount of total voltage the battery and/or battery packs have isn't the issue. What counts is how long you can operate between battery changes, the convenience of battery availability, and the operating cost.
Battery Cost

I agree with what you are saying. My old SS2 used two 9V batteries. This gave me a good few detecting trips, but when the batteries went down ... THEY WENT DOWN QUICK! and at pretty short notice <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":("> My Laser Hawkeye (Deleon) uses 8AA cells. I thought that this would suck! as the manual states that you can expect anything between 10-20 hours of detecting before you need to replace them. Let me tell you, I am still on my first set of alkalines, and have detected for over 30 hours now! the (accurate) battery check graph (which has 8 segments) is only down to 5 now! and the power drain / drop-off is so much smoother than with the 9V cells. I always thought that detectors that used 8AA cells were a stupid idea ... Wow, how wrong could I be? <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> and as you say, you don't have to shop around much to get a great deal on AA alkalines. I've got an 8 for the price of 4 deal which has allowed me to stockpile over a years worth of Duracells for HALF PRICE! A word of caution to those of you that might be considering 'saving' a few Bucks on cheaper cells:
Buying cheap batteries that are <STRONG>not</STRONG> alkalines is a false economy! the power drop-off of these inferior cells is so sudden, that you just end up high and dry in the middle of nowhere with a dead detector <img src="/metal/html/shocked.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":shock"> pay a little more and get alkalines! <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)"> you will notice the difference! I was going on the Advertised battery life of the Tejon which is 20-30 hours.
Please compare apples and apples. How much is a 9v battery at Costco ? It certainly isn't $2.99
I think I'll go beach hunting tomorrow. It's supposed to be in the 70's. <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">

John,
You have a point about the cost comparisons based upon the manufacturer's printed use time, but anyone who has used a Tesoro through the years <EM>knows</EM> that if Tesoro has ever understated anything, it has been the operating time for the specific batteries!
However, if we look only at that advertisied claim, we see that the 9V powered

I just purchased an 8 pack of Walgreens' 9v Alkalines for $7.99 on sale. They are normally $9.99 which is still a great price. I've used these before and get decent life out of them.
So you're getting almost twice the advertised battery life out of your detectors ? That's incredible.
When I had my Bandido 2mm, the output sound would start getting a bit weak after 14-16 hours of use. You can sure tell the difference with a fresh battery!
Having used many detectors which required AA batteries, I much prefer the convenience and lighter weight of a single 9v battery, hence I'm partial to the 9v Tesoros and the X5.
