.. also a coil in my inventory that I keep mounted on a lower rod in my Accessory Coil Tote.
When I got my MX-7 last November on a drive over to White's, I also bought the 7" DD made by Detech and got a 6½" Concentric 'prototype' coil so-to-speak. They didn't have the finished product in production yet but soon did, and it has the new name 'Six Shooter.' I soon traded for a 2nd MX-7 so I could keep each coil mounted and have identical settings on the two units. Then I worked them, side-by-side for in-the-field comparisons at several sites I usually hunt. I did some urban Coin Hunting, but most of my searches are in ghost towns and homesteads and similar locations where I encounter a dense scattering of nail and other ferrous debris.
The 7" DD is a great open-frame designed coil that I prefer to use when beach or water hunting as it isn't buoyant. Yes, it does work very well, but for me and most of my hunting needs, it is at-the-ready for a quick change on a lower and middle rod in my tote. I keep the 6½": Concentric coil mounted for full-time use on my MX-7. With the 7" DD set-to be used I parted with my 2nd MX-7 because one handles all the tasks and usually it is with only the 6½" Concentric coil.
That said, I think anyone who gets an MX-7 can save that 950 for big open areas and take their pick between the 7" DD open-frame design or the 6½" Concentric solid-body coil. Both can work well for most search needs, but for me the 6½" Concentric gave some improved performance when in a dense iron nail environment. Just a personal thing for many based upon where they usually hunt and the amount of ferrous junk they generally deal with. I took a look back to see the result I had hunting two lots here in town where they had demolished two houses and noticed just about an even split of Wheat-back cents and silver dimes found with either the 7" DD or 6½" Concentric. Actually it was about 60% of them with the 7" because I already knew what to expect from the 6½" Concentric so I was spending more time with the 7" DD coil. They can both handle most site environments.
The main ingredient in success is what the coil is attached to and, for me, it is the MX-7 which is a favorite in my Detector Team, especially for Coin & Jewelry Hunting with Relic Hunting tasks a very close 2nd. The bulk of my MX-7 searches are done in the Coin & Jewelry search mode [size=small](White's calls it a 'program')[/size] with the custom settings I prefer. A light weight and well balanced detector, and that's something I appreciate and need in order to hang in there and continue having fun.
