Hi Guys,
Sorry to be a pain, but I have had my X70 a month atleast and have had it out only one time for 30m mins. Took it to the local park (it is real trashy) and it went nuts ( most likely user error) Have own my Deleon since Oct. and just now knowning it. I was hopeing some one would give me a crash course on setting it up and what mode to hunt in? Right now coin hunting, although I have been relic hunting since March, it is time to hunt coins. I just need to get some time behind it and could use any advice I can get. I know you guys will tell me just get out and hunt and dig everything, I just don't get that much time to hunt, so I would be grate full for any and all help!
I live in S.E. Kansas, if anyone who uses a X70 that lives no more than a 100 miles from me would take me and show me so stuff, I would be glad to drive to you for the lesson!

Thanks Greg

Turn it on use Pattern 2, sent Sens at about 16, volume at 30 (Max), 4 tones, threshold at 1 (I like it quiet), hit pinpoint/detect and then press GB and the Auto buttom and pump the coil up and down until it auto-balances (AU) and the GB reading will appear. Hit pin/detect button again and then hit Menu/select button and run your Sens up to 26 and the hit pin/detect again and hunt for a bit. If it is quiet and you don't see the numbers jumping around alot, you are good to go and if you want, you can hit Menu/select again and run the Sens to 28 and see if it will still run quiet without the numbers jumping around. You can adjust the Sens in either direction until you get it to hunt quietly. I had to fool with the Sens and GB until I got used to it too. Read everything Monte writes, he seems to give good explanations to these kinds of questions. Good luck, and you need to hunt more to get a feel for it, but, I think you will never use that Deleon again! HH!

I run my X70 on almost exactly what he suggested. The only difference is I prefer 3 tones. That would be the only difference between his and my settings. I really love this detector! Be sure to listen very carefully for the 'chirps' the detector gives as it just may be a good target at the edge of the coil pickup area( not depth wise, but the area just at the edge of the coil). After more use of this detector you will know what I mean in the previous statement. If your sites are real trashy, then just slow up somewhat on the sweep speed. This is where and why a NEW SMALLER COIL will be a winner for this detector. (Are you listening Minelab???). I have been detecting for almost 30 years and although I know what I am trying to get across, sometimes it is hard for me to do so. If you have questions on what I posted, please feel free to email me and give me your phone number. I will be glad to call. I love to help when I can. Sometimes it takes a while for things to click for me! If someone thinks I am wrong, then please jump in here. That is what this forum is for. I would love to see more posts on what people are learning about the Xterra line of detectors. Knowledge helps us all!

i am really liking what i have heard about the x70, but i only hunt the beach 95% damp sand - shallow surf and some dry.

i have expII excal. and sovereign but i sent the sov. to my daughter in colorado, so i want to replace it

i have heard the x70 may not perform all that great in the damp and shallow water

can i get your opinions and anyone elses who would like to add in.

thanks
max

Initially tune the threshold so it just barely makes a sound. If you want it more "silent" just move it one more setting below where the threshold tone is heard. Don't randomly select a low number. If you turn it down more than required to "just make it silent", you risk the detector not making enough of an audible signal to "break through" that "silent threshold" and it may not be enough to catch your attention. JMHO HH Randy

havent been to the coast with my X70. I only live 65 miles from South Padre Island so it shouldn't be too long before I make a trip there but until then I can't answer. I can only say I have 3 other detectors that have a very difficult time in the wet sand and the X70 does have a beach mode so I am hoping that it will do well in the damp sand. I'll post when I get down there for a hunt.

of the readers had "older ears" like mine, and would set it too low. I can't hear any threshold coming out of mine until I get it at +4. I like it with just a little bit of sound, so I can hear the blanking as well as the positive tones. HH Randy

I can run mine on 24 or 26 if I ground balance a couple of times over the wet sand (it is a little fruity, but not bad). I love having the target id in case the zincs are plentiful. Having said that - is the X70 a Sov GT or Elite in the wet sand? IMHO - no.
Max, I've come to this conclusion after years of beach hunting - for optimum hunting, you would need 3 detectors for the beach. There would be one for dry sand, light and easily maneuverable with target ID and good discrimination for foil and HOT on gold; another for wet sand that is unaffected by wet salt sand and have great depth for digging it all (multi-freq Minelabs or PIs); and one for the water that must be waterproof (for salt water, there's nothing like an Excal). I've found the X70 to be a great compromise detector for dry and wet sand, and even the shallows along the surf lane, providing you're not squeemish to run a detector designed for land use over salt water. In fact, at high tide, I'd rather use it than my X70 because the majority of my hunting will probably be in dry sand.

... YOU'RE NOT GETTING OUT DETECTING NEARLY ENOUGH! :sadwalk:

"Took it to the local park (it is real trashy) and it went nuts (most likely user error)"... At with any detector out there, when it comes to hunting trashy sites it isn't just our ability to have the patience to deal with it and the knowledge to set up our detectors, was a4re also at the mercy of the manufacturer to provide us with a decent-size (AND I MEAN A SMALLER-SIZE COIL) to better deal with the dense trash. Unfortunately, we don't have one yet, but I certainly hope we get one soon!

Until then, there are a few things you can do that might help. I love my X-Terra 70 and it has a lot of potential, but one thing that is important to remember is that it is a slow-motion discriminator. Not ultra-slow like the Explorer, but you are best served at a comfortably slow sweep speed. A too-fast sweep and you can (will) impair performance.

"Have own my Deleon since Oct. and just now knowing it."... I feel that once you get comfortable with your X-T 70 the DeLe

Remember that the stock coil with the X-Terra 70 is a concentric coil, not a DD.

I'm just recovering from a busted leg (laid up 3 months) so I won't be out for a few weeks, but when I do get out I am going to try the X-70 in prospecting mode on the dry & see if it will see some of that fine gold that everyone leaves behind.

I will try as you sugessted, and I thank you. I gave the X70 a 4 hour work out today, and I ran it like Bill said. I know that I need a lot of time behind the X70 to learn it, and I am also pretty new to dectecting. I found out a few things today, clad dimes do come in at 38, new pennies come in around 30-33, but so do bottle caps and the metal twist off, ( The Dumb Question of The Day, if I reject those out, then won't I loose all the coins that fall on the same number?)
I told you guys I was new to this hobby, and I will be great full for the help!

H.H.
